I am guilty of being excited when we hired Bo Pelini

I was happy when we hired Bo Pelini, thinking about how great our defense was in 2005-2007. I was happy about going back to a 4-3 with our dline bringing pressure. I was happy about having a defensive coach who would be fired up hyping up the defense. Boy was I wrong! This has been a disaster and I don’t see a happy ending. I had the same mindset of coach O thinking this was going to be a great fit matching his personality. I am guilty of being happy about the hire and I will admit that I was wrong about the hire. I don’t see coach O recovering from this and I’m probably overreacting in the moment but this is getting ugly.

Sounds like "premature exhilaration". You may want to see your doctor.

I was kinda guilty of the same thing. Fell into the trap of thinking that he just wasn't good at being a head coach and a defensive coach at the same time. Thought that just being a DC would be fine and maybe one day he will be. But, it's all bad right now.

Why suddenly this season became important?

It’s not that the season is important, it’s that the defense has looked genuinely horrible with little signs of improvement.

I didn’t necessarily get excited, but I didn’t hate it either. Definitely didn’t think it would be this bad. I still think the whole “game has passed him by” stuff is a bunch of uneducated fan bullshite, but they clearly aren’t doing a very good job teaching the players the system or adapting to their talents.

Me too. I remembered his first stint with us, but his 2nd stint is not working out well at all. i'm not sure he makes it through the season.

I was too. I talked a coworker down from his anti-Bo stance. I'm eating crow. Sorry for the false hope, Lennon.

I pretty much felt the same way.
It's unbelievable how bad the D has been at times. This is a very abnormal year, though. That's really the only possible positive way to contextualize it. I figured it would be a weird and wild year of college football if there was a season, that would result in wildly unexpected statistical performances at times. But I didn't expect these kinds of defensive performances at all.

There are a whole bunch of us who did the same thing. This is shaping up to be the worst season in 20 years. I thought the days of seeing us have a losing season were put to rest and that we moved past that. ESPECIALLY after a once in a lifetime season like we had last year! Coach O needs to act fast on this and pull a Matt Canada on Pelini.

Most of the rant loved the hire. You were in the majority on this topic.

Man I was excited too - now I’m like “what the hell happened?!?”

I hate to say it but I just don’t see any other option than to move on from Pelini. Maybe Coach O gets one of the assistants to take over for Pelini at this point but who knows.
