Considering the required financial commitment, understandable at this level & lower divisions. Afraid the only way D-I plays is with a NFL model; quarantined teams playing in empty stadiums. The NFL can have teams play somewhere else of their city is closed, like the Saints did post Katrina, but the colleges do not have that option.

Looks like the chances for fall college football are very, very slim at this point.

The college football playoff just tweeted out that they hope to start on time. I fully expect football in the fall, California who knows, but everywhere else, yes. Based off of nothing

The key point of your assertion. FYI, California has handled this pretty well considering their population size.
Nothing is guaranteed until we have adequate testing and tracking. It's not going to business as usual for sometime.
Hopefully decisions are made on science and tangible targets rather than emotion.

Well, Los Angeles has announced that there will be no concerts or sporting events held there until 2021 at the earliest.

If the PAC-12 doesn't play football this year, will anyone notice?

What year are you in? I-AA changed to FCS years ago in 2006.

He said they should be prepared for that, not "no events all year"

"But until there's either a vaccine, some sort of pharmaceutical intervention, or herd immunity." So if one of those occurs, and there are thoughts that California already has some form of herd immunity which is why it hasn't hit them as hard as New York, then they can start returning to normal

That's true, he did say unless their is a vaccine, but it really doesn't appear that any of the health professionals believe that is going to happen by the fall.

The SEC will play football in the Fall. Too much money is on the line. They may be handing out masks as you come in the door and they may tell older people or those with compromised immune systems to stay home but I don't see how you can keep the country shut down into September for something that is equivalent to a typical flu season for mortality rates so far. We will literally be in a Great Depression if the country is still making people stay home by the time football would be starting.

While I would be furious over this, if the last college football image I have for two years is Joe Burrow smoking a cigar after decimating Clempson for the Natty...

Most athletic departments need ticket sales and student fees to be profitable. You can’t charge student fees for online classes and obviously can’t get ticket sales if no one is there. So what do you do to support football and all your other sports? Not everyone has big time SEC TV contracts.

This is a major issue. I don’t think football will be played until students are back on campus, which is a big reason why spring football seems most realistic at this point.

and I am just the opposite. I think it will be cancelled completely which in turn will take YEARS to overcome. I REALLY, REALLY hope I'm wrong!

After seeing the response to this virus I can't see how we can go from groups of less than 10 to 100k stadiums by August.

You won’t see that. What you will see is the P5 schools (at least) play in empty stadiums. The tv contracts is the lions share of their revenue. The G5 schools may be SOL.

The other option is playing in the spring of 2021, then having the “2021 season” start in November of 2021, then It will be back to the normal fall season in 2022.

The second option obviously has a lot of logistical issues but it would (hopefully) allow for fans to attend games.

I agree we could see an attempt to play games in empty stadiums like the NFL seems to be planning to do. But once one player, coach, or staff member tests positive, all bets are off....hate to say it..

Agreed... CFB won’t be played with empty stadiums.

Most likely, CFB will either have a delayed start (Oct/Nov) or Spring start... in either case, it will be with fans.

I think it is extremely unlikely CFB will play in empty stadiums. The NFL might be able to make that work, but colleges won’t.

In the next 1-2 months, You’ll start to see schools around the country announce that in-person classes for the fall semester have been cancelled. Once that happens, we’ll know that CFB won’t be played in the fall. Spring will be the only option to have a CFB season.

At this point, my best educated guess on what will happen:
-most colleges will go to online classes for the fall
-NFL will play in empty stadiums, normal schedule
-CFB will announce moving entire season to spring
-NFL will announce the 2021 draft has been pushed to after the conclusion of the CFB season

Given what we know--and don't know--now, this prediction makes as much sense as any.

That's not true at all. Certainly the media rights money is a significant piece, but the majority of the money comes from ticket sales.

This is a few years old, but it shows ticket sales still bring in the most money. On day that could change, but not now.

LINK

Playing games with no fans is akin to allowing restaurants to remain open, but only for take out/delivery. It generates some revenue, which is better than nothing, but it is not a sustainable business practice.

Unfortunately, for most athletic departments the expenses of college sports can't be decreased to a significant degree (one noteworthy exception could be if the coaches agree to significantly reduce or defer their salaries). Thus, if there is no football as we know it this fall. That is, with paying fans. Then many AD's may have no choice but to suspend ALL sports for the 20-21 school year as they simply won't be able to pay for them.

This is the kind of shite that happens when one makes knee-jerk, short-sighted, drastic decisions. The significant ripple-effects can extend greatly for months, years
