I think 8 teams would have been better. Teams 5-8 never going to win the natty but could make some noise and provide excitement.
I like an 8 team format, but to say 5-8 will never win it all is absurd.

Maybe team 5 had an injury that caused them to lose a game. Or lost a close game to a great team on a fluke play. Or a bad penalty. Or bad weather hurt us.

Things happen, and great teams can lose games too, you know. Doesn't mean they shouldn't have a shot at the NC.

Kinda like other sports like baseball regionals and basketball March Madness.

I’d predict that nobody outside of the top 8 will ever win a championship

I think you are right however we have seen some nice upsets. TCU over Michigan was fun although it made for a shitbag title game.

Will be fun but the end result is going to be the exact same -- there are really only 2-3 teams that separate each year that can legitimately win the natty

I think you're forgetting it's single elimination. All it takes is one upset and that team which would have been champion before is instantly gone. I also think with the transfer portal and NIL there is a lot more parity than their used to be. Even Saban couldn't sustain dominance anymore.

The playoff was broken and expanding it only expands the issue.

Couldn't disagree more. In the old system, teams were avoiding tough non-conference matchups. Thwy didn't want to get eliminated from contention early on.

If we lose to USC, we can still make the playoff, so there is no ince time not to schedule tough non-conference games.

Go back and look who 5-8 were over the past decade vs. who won

The worst part about the new system is the highest seeded teams (those with byes) don’t get to experience a home playoff game. It’s more fun to be ranked 5 than 4, even if it means an extra game.

that's just a fan's perspective.

The top 4 seeds getting a bye is a huge advantage that any playoff team would gladly accept.

A home playoff game in Tiger Stadium will be epic.

I agree. I also think it’s stupid that the top seeded teams are not rewarded with a home playoff game.

Sure, but they aren’t mutually exclusive. Put the QFs at campus sites and push the bowls out to the four first round games.

Two 4 seeds have already won a championship, but you think it's impossible for a 5 or 6 seed to win. You think there is zero chance that Georgia could have won the championship last year?

Does anyone know how it will work for season ticket holders when we host a playoff game in TS? Do we get to buy tickets where our seats are or will we just get stuck wherever??

You do realize what makes it a "money grab" right?

Ridiculous take. With the current setup you could have

1- UGA (SEC Champ)
2- OSU (big 10 champ)
3- FSU (ACC champ)
4- Oklahoma St (big 12 champ)

That means your 5-8 could come from the likes of:

Bama, Texas, LSU, Oregon, Clemson, Michigan, Penn St

You telling me teams 5-8 could will not be able to win a national title?

I didn't say seeds, I said four best teams. Small but important distinction.

I am telling you that one of the top 2-3 teams will win it every year. How they are seeded is irrelevant.

Also, to point to an example of a season that hasn't even started yet is a "ridiculous take" in its own.

It’s gonna suck, and it’s gonna take 2-3 years to realize these massive regular season matchups we’re freaking out about right now won’t mean shite as 2 and 3 loss teams will get into the playoffs.

no, the big regular season matchups will still be huge. They'll affect conference championships, seedings, and playoff byes, all of which are massively important.

This is silly. You could just as easily say “the best team will win every year” and claim to be right every time because “how they are seeded is irrelevant.”
