How was our defense so bad in 2020 with Bo Pelini?

How in the hell was that defense statistically one of the worst in school history but we had Pelini as DC from 05-07 and ranked top 3 nationally in total defense all 3 of those years? I legitimately thought Pelini was an upgrade from Aranda.

Why would you think this? Pelini's defenses hadn't been good for a while.

I thought that because of how dominant on defense we was when we had him those 3 years

I didn't think he was going to be an upgrade but I definitely didn't think they would be the worst ever.

I feel like there was some sort of disconnect whether it was the players, coaches or just not clicking in general.

I'm leaning towards the players though.

Transitioning to the 4-3 was a problem in and of itself. Pelini/O were crazy for shoving that scheme down the throats of players who couldn’t fit it that fast.

He didn’t click with Os culture. Or Arandas. Those guys were used to Arandas style.

And I’m pretty sure he just didn’t understand how to adjust or teach properly how to adjust. I don’t know which. But it was a failure.

A lot of coordinators and coaches didn’t get along with O. It was probably a dysfunctional mess on defense when Aranda left.

I have heard that Pelini was ok with running a 3-4, and O insisted on a 4-3. But not sure if true.

I believe Pelini said this to the media at some point if I’m not mistaken.

Bo was just there for the check, and to fund his retirement. The position was ripe for a young, hungry, talented coordinator, and Orgeron hired a tired old has-been. Combine that with the loose ship Orgeron was running, and it was a disaster.

Why in the world Orgeron and Woodward decided it was a good idea to triple Pelini's salary when absolutely no one else was trying to hire him is a mystery.

Not one of the worst, the worst by about a touchdown which is incredible.

Pelini was/ is an a-hole who was coming for a quick payday. He was shoved down Orgeron's throat.

It appears both he and his Boss retired early.
Pelini retired a couple years previous, Orgerron retired after 2019, although both continued to milk their employer.

Bo is 54 years old, which should be the prime of his coaching career, yet no one has hired him since he was fired by LSU. That tells us how bad the hire was.

Of course, I doubt Bo is actively looking for a job since LSU provided him with a comfortable nest egg.

I have to admit that I was happy when we hired him because I thought he did a good job when he was here before. His last game here was the national championship game which we won. His credentials as a DC were impressive. I guess it didn’t take long for the game to pass him by.

We were doomed from the start… the idea of trying to switch defenses with no spring ball (covid) was a tall order. Should of had Pelini learn Arnada’s base D and go from there. Everyone knew it would be an asterisk season anyways.

Gus, you're absolutely right. I imagine they're both pretty happy that Woodward gave them both a very nice parting gift. The stupid salary he gave Pelini and the six-year contract he gave Orgeron will pay for lots of spring break getaways.

I hated the hire from the get go but back when it happened I wash bashed for it. If you just go look at his career he’s had more awful defenses than good ones and his best days were a decade behind him when we brought him back. Besides nostalgia there was no reason to make the hire.

Because a offense changed a lot from 07

That and out DL wasn’t close to what he had during his best years at LSU and Nebraska.

He was at his best with guys like Sun and Dorsey.
