Why would you put your head baseball coach on the search committee
Posted on 11/10/25 at 5:25 pm to PSS101
Enough to put LSU ahead of USC for the most titles in college baseball history.

Indeed. Jay Johnson will win at least 5 more titles giving LSU 13 to USC's 12, because we know the folks aren't going support Trojan baseball enough to make them relevant anytime soon.

When do we pull past USC?
i dont really care about rod dedeauxs "titles". those were so far back and much easier back then. way tougher now and was tougher for skip bertman.
F USC.
LSU titles> USC "titles"

If USC would update facilities and hire a great coach, they could pull all the West coast talent to that school. Hoping they don’t figure it out. They now have a lot of Big 10 tv $$ the PAC 12 didn’t have.

USC won a flukey title only because we shite the bed in 1998. they have not done shite since. those other titles they have are from the stone age and hold as much weight as AP nattys from 1945 for football.

All of these programs have actually outspent LSU when it comes to facilities.
Wasted money from a bygone era. “Facilities” use to be the attractant because the players couldn’t be paid (legally). Now, no great player values a nice locker over an extra $100k+ in his bank account.
I’d MUCH rather see LSU win championships while playing in boring Alex Box than watch them flame out in a really nice stadium

Jay has stated that he wants an indoor and pitching lab.
The stadium itself is dated and needs to be upgraded for fan experience.

we could still be playing in the old box.

As good as JJ is, and he's obviously the best coach in college baseball, winning the College World Series is incredibly hard to do. Especially in this day and age of NIL, transfer portal, etc. It is an absolute miracle Skip managed to win 5 in 10 years. I don't care how good of a coach you are, or how good your players are, it is a long daunting gauntlet to navigate the entire season, win the regional, win the super, and then beat the best 8 teams in the country remaining, including winning a best of 3 with the winning team of the other bracket. Absolutely amazing he's managed to do just that, 2 of the last 3 years. And, it's baseball. Anything can happen. Which makes LSUS' 59-0 season unfathomable. Impossible to do in baseball. Skip's era was a bit easier, due to numerous factors. One being that not nearly as many schools cared as much about baseball, or spent as much $. On the other hand Skip not only won 5 in 10 years, he was undefeated, 5-0, in National Championship games when a single game was played to determine the national champion. All that being said, JJ gets at least one more, maybe 2. If he keeps scaring away his competition like Vitello running away to the show, maybe he wins 10. Who knows. What I do know, is that this is going to be a hell of a ride every spring/summer as long as he's coaching the Fightin' Tigahs. Let's pray we make the right decision hiring our next HBC on the football side of it. We are LSU! We should be contending for an NC year round. Unfortunately, Mulkey probably won't be here very much longer. And I've been on record saying that I'd hire her today to coach the men's team.

The stadium was half assed when it opened. Why are people afraid to admit that it could use upgrades?

Under. This 34 player roster limit is about to make the college baseball job the hardest to win at. One or 2 injuries to big time contributors and the season dramatically changes. Also evaluations of players will be crucial. Can’t miss on a pitcher.

Over.
Dude is only 48 years old. As long as he doesn't go about 5-6 years without winning one, I think he can 6+.
He wanted to come here (any coach did, don't kid yourself Woody!) and he knows how to handle Baton Rouge, recruit and develop.
Generally low profile, comes from humble beginnings (NAIA represent!) and got him at just the right time in his career. He had built Arizona up but wasn't overly attached AND proved that you can bring players with you (Berry).

Can guarantee with certainty JJ isn’t leaving LSU for any of those 3 teams
