How many LSU defensive players would you say have played at an elite SEC level all year?

The only players I feel have played at an elite level all season is Wingo and Perkins.

Two players I thought would be leaders on defense this season was Smith and Ryan, but IMO both have been complete busts. Most of the season, Smith has been completely dominated by lesser OL and Ryan can't tackle or cover to save his life. In regards to the rest of the defensive players, I can't name one that has remotely come close to playing at an elite level.

I know many of the players are young and have a lot to learn, but I think it further highlights the poor coaching they are receiving. I believe we have talent, but when you don't receive good coaching, you won't see players improve as the season goes along, which is exactly what is going on at LSU.

IMO, it's clear we need a completely new defensive coaching staff next year!

Wingo is second team and that’s it. Perkins has played poorly. He often gets washed and loses gap integrity.

True, but I attribute Perkins' mistakes to learning a new position and coaches misusing him early the season.

Eh, Perkins has been playing coverage A LOT this year and has graded out as the top coverage linebacker in the SEC. He's also 4th in the SEC in TFLs. He's just not used the same at all anymore, isn't piling up the sacks as a result, and our fans have decided he's played poorly when he hasn't.

Wow, a take that isn’t football ignorant, rare on this board.

None. Jefferson is probably the closest this year. Wingo maybe if he wasn’t playing hurt for a while.

Perkins has his moments but overall he’s been disappointing. Likely coaches are the reason not him

Brooks was playing well before he got sick. I'm not sure he got enough games in to qualify as elite, though.

After him I would say Jefferson and maybe Weeks have been the best but neither are elite. Burns, Sam, and Penn have had good moments but they've had more terrible moments.

Closest is Jefferson. This is not all on the players. Players were not put in a position to succeed.

Nobody

Wingo was solid, but has been out a few games now.
Jefferson has been respectable when he plays.
Perkins has made a couple plays, but has been nonexistent for a lot of the time.

Those are the only three that approach AVERAGE SEC play caliber, meaning they've done things you expect out of a basic SEC player who gets playing time. None of them have been ELITE, and certainly not ALL YEAR.

I noticed again against Georgia State- the announcers said their QB was having a nice bounce back from his past several games. That's been the theme all season long... if you've been dogshit recently and need to get right, come play against LSU's defense. Even Auburn, holding Thorne to 102 yds, that was a noticeable improvement for him against D1 teams. He was coming off games of 44 yds vs A&M and 82 against UGA, 94 against Cal.

Grainger, the guy for GSU, was coming off games of 115 against App State, 82 yds against James Madison, 157 against Ga Southern. He was 23 of 29 (with a couple big drops) for a TD and 179 yds against LSU.

Army had a 100 yd rusher (21 carries) against us, with a true freshman who threw the ball 9 times at QB.

Grambling went down the field with 80+ yd drives their first 2 possessions, to score a TD and a FG.

Again, we do NOT have any ELITE players on defense; we've got a couple who are average, and the best of those guys is out.

While I don't think anyone has played at an Elite level...there were several players who played well despite the woes of a unit that was disappointing most of the season.

Burns is always around the ball. You cannot take that away from him.

Don't kill me for this, but Perkins has been used properly this season...to me. He's not, in my opinion, an every down linebacker. Seems like the Budda Baker / Isiah Simmons role of playing Safety and Linebacker is where he should probably be. Hopefully the next DC allows him to blitz more from all over the field...but for covering and TFL, he still showed that he's an above average player.

Honorable mention...Sage Ryan has been okay more than he's been bad.

Not a soul on this defense has played elite. I contribute a lot of that to Matt House.
