How Hard is it for Skenes to get a win?

He’s pitched 32 games
in his 10 wins his ERA is 0.29
in the other 22 games he has an ERA of 2.82 and he’s 0-10.
edit: this is embarrassing: his ERA in his 10 wins is actually 0.29

He plays for a bad team, they have 89 losses

yeah but generally bad teams don’t do it on the back of a 1.97 ERA pitcher.

Wins aren't a good measuring stick to judge a pitcher; you can pitch lights out of 8 innings and your bull pin can lose the game in the ninth. Anyone with eyes can see Skenes is one of if not the best pitcher in baseball, he's just not going to get a lot of wins on a team this bad.

Similar scenario " per AI
LSU football: Projecting the Tigers' offensive depth chart ...The LSU football offense in 2023 was historically potent, averaging 45.5 points and 543.5 total yards per game
LSU led the nation in offense and did not make the playoffs
To win you gotta play both sides of the game

I agree, but that isn't what the op was saying. It's really a post about just how shitty the Pirates team is.

Sounds like he needs to pitch better!
Joking of course...

He is definitely deserving of the NL CY Award. One can only hope the Pirates improve, but sadly I don’t think he’ll get quality run support until he moves on to a better team via trade or FA. Wishing him all the best as he continues to dominate at his position!

I've come across this stat a few times on facebook. Not this particular one, but similar ones. If the Pirates could play some offense, Pirates / Skenes would be in a way better position
quote:
The average runs a game in baseball is 4.227 but we will round down to 4
Now if Skenes has 4 runs in run support in every game, he pitched (over 5IP) he would the most winning pitcher in baseball with :14 wins :3 losses :1 tie

I saw a much more impressive stat that if he had 4 runs per start his record would be 35-3 or something ridiculous

A couple more
paul is second in the MLB in Wins Lost (left with lead bullpen blew it) with 7.
He has 0 Losses saved (left down a run and team came back to score enough to get him to a least a ND)
He has 0 ”Cheap win” that’s wins with 6+ innings giving up 3 ER.

demand an immediate trade!!!

It's tougher now than ever for a starting pitcher to get wins on a bad team.
By comparison, Steve Carlton in 1972 went 27-10 on a Phillies team that went 59-97. He threw 30 complete games and had a 1.97 ERA.

And Skenes didn't throw nearly the innings Carlton did.
Sandy Koufax managed to get wins with a pathetic offense behind him.

Nolan Ryan in 1987 lead the league in ERA and strikeouts (1.69 ERA, 270 K) and had a 4-16 win-loss record

Wasn't Ryan 8-16?
And there wasn't any Cy Young talk, either.

Shows you how dumb that stat is!
