Everyone keeps talking about the QB battle, but does LSU defense return to some amount of normalcy this year?

For years, even a passive CFB fan knew when LSU was mentioned, they were going to bring it on defense. Yet, we’ve spent 2 years watching a secondary that often times wasn’t even on the screen. Until Damone figured it out halfway through his final season, our LBs were atrocious and had no leader. Who are our dogs in the secondary? Who leads the secondary? Does Jay Ward learn how to make an open field tackle or just continue to get trucked?

Won’t matter if Daniel’s or Nuss win the job if this D doesn’t get back to the standard.

I think the Tigers linebackers will be better than expected. Baskerville is an experienced player, Mike Jones should be improved.

And newcomers Perkins and Weeks have plenty of talent.

I’ll say this. Matt House’s defense at Kentucky his last year there was something like 4th in the nation and we definitely have more talent on this ‘22 defense. Aka we should crush this year!

Realistic expectations are an overall improvement than last year, which shouldn't be that hard. I will be pleasantly surprised if we are top 50 in the country which seems like a reasonable goal

Damone had it figured out two seasons before that. It was YOU who didn’t have it figured out.

I was arguing, in 2019, that Clark was a future NFL star, while guys like you were bashing him. Instead of admitting you were wrong, you’ve concocted an improvement narrative.

He was not good the first half last year. He played MACH better down the stretch.

I will give him this, he improved every game.

So he started playing faster down the stretch? Like, so fast that there was an audible explosion-like sound?

I thought we finally had educated the rant that Damone was not the problem, shitty defensive coaches and scheme were more to blame. He got burned when Ed moved to the 4-3 without adequate personnel and no coaching...

They obviously are getting better coaching and a better scheme but we are really thin at CB. Hopefully Converse Bernard and Banks are healthy for the season but I haven’t heard they are. Maybe Baskerville and Jones have breakout seasons but not a lot of experience behind them at ILB.

our starting CB's:

Bernard Converse- 22 years old, started 47 games for OKSt
Mekhi Garner - 22.7 years old, started 16 games at ULL
Sevyn Banks - 22 years old, started 15 games for ohio st. was injured a lot
Colby Richardson - 24 years old!

for reference, Derek Stingley is 21 years old

We have 4 grown arse men playing CB for us which is always a good thing. Depth is slightly an issue - can't afford any injuries here, but I think their age will be very helpful

this is what i was thinking. clark crushed it in 2019, then all of a sudden can't play? nah, that was all coaching. because again, the second ol Ed lost his job and started letting the coaches coach, clark was like a new player.

Despite the reasons why, Damone Clarke spent 1.5 seasons behind plays until he absolutely flipped a switch. Just because the talent was there and not being taken advantage of didn’t mean it didn’t happen. We struggled without a Devin White, Patrick Queen, and Michael Divinity at LB the last 2 years.

I think we continue to struggle there this year and as mentioned, our DB depth is very much a cause for concern.

This. We may get beat by superior athletes but we won't have breakdowns in coverage like the last 2 years. We'll match up well in the secondary with almost every team we play.

yeah, we were completely depleted at every position by the end of the season last year. Where as we look to have quality depth everywhere this year, should be much more competitive.
