House's reliance on zone coverage

Been listening to some of the talking heads trying to explain why we weren't seeing some of the younger DB's, namely Stamps, Welch, and Harris. One of the theories is that "those guys aren't familiar with zone schemes, particularly Harris". I seem to remember we were very zone-reliant last year as well.

Is this a byproduct of our lack of depth/talent? Or is this just what House prefers?

Either way, it's evident we're leaving more physically gifted guys on the bench in favor of smaller, slower, yet more experienced players.

Really would like to see some fresh blood out there to handle these challenging matchups.

We got burned running zone against FSU on numerous occasions. Put Harris out there on an island, and he will do his job. I also think a guy like Zy Alexander and Sage Ryan are better suited for man. Luckily FSU’s WR group is probably the best we will face all season, but we have got to play our best players to reach where I want this team to reach this season.

We don't have a single human being on our roster that was going to cover those FSU WR's in man Sunday night.

I think it’s just a part of his “scheme” but obviously it just isn’t working out

Makes you wonder why we didn't spend all that time trying to scheme in an attempt to combat the mismatch.

Just saying "FSU receivers were better and we knew that" doesn't exonerate the coaches. If we know that, then they know that.

SO PLAN ACCORDINGLY.

The zone definitely sucked on 3rd down. I would rather man up and bring lots of heat on 3rd long. Especially if rushing 3 allows the QB 5 seconds to throw, a good QB will always find an opening in zone.

But to play devil's advocate, Alexander got thrown to the sidelines by Wilson off the line in the 1st qtr or 2nd qtr. I couldn't understand why he was so open that quickly. Then I saw the replay where he tossed Alexander to the ground. So I can understand why he might want to play some zone.

There was some solid DB play on a fade or 2 but the ball was perfectly placed.

This and with Smith out those guys would have had all day to run away from our corners.

Historically, LSU hasn’t had much success with zone coverage.

Dead serious.. What could the coaches have done? Those WR are power houses and big too.

We couldn't cover them in man or zone, as he was trying both the other night.

Idk, I'm not the one being paid millions to figure that out.

But you'd hope your HC and DC have a little more creativity than to just throw their hands up in defeat and assume the WRs are too big and powerful to even try and find a way to counter the mismatch.

All of our 2019 opponents knew it, too. Why didn’t they scheme?

Zone is fine if you can get pressure on the QB. LSU could not consistently pressure Travis, and he found holes in the zone with 4-5 seconds to throw. Good QBs will do this to us all season long unless House makes some adjustments.

Denver Harris would’ve had a chance. At 6’1, length and 4.4 speed physically he absolutely matches up with Coleman

I think we will get more pressure as the season goes on. Bringing back big number 0 will help. Also playing 13 more will help. 18 is already a beast. Hopefully the other guys come along too.

What I have always said for years when it comes to lsu
Whether it’s understanding or education, our players never did well in zone….tell them to run with the guy in front of them and live with it

They are idiots for thinking house should run man. He went to man only because they suck at zone handoffs.

Man was even worse.

It’s no the scheme. It’s the players.

I would rather blitz 5, playing man on wr’s and mixing in spy/zone/double with LBer

I have an idea....let's mix it up a bit.....or are guys too dense to know both zone and man to man coverages?
A little pressure on the QB would go a long way to improving our DB play....that I know for sure.
