Scott Woodward shares the blame with his funding for baseball. What changed this year from previous years? The scholarship limits. From 11.7 scholarships to 34 roster spots. How did LSU fund the extra scholarships? How was the revenue sharing distribution for baseball? Did we have an NIL collective for baseball?
All of this appears to be fixed. Now Jay can go back to work.

1st of all. Nothing “Hot” about this take.
2nd. Jay has coached with analytics since he’s been here. This isn’t new.
That is not how analytics work…

“What analytic are.”
Begs the question, What analytic are?

The pitching staff was the worst LSU staff in the last 40 years. I don’t possess the data nor do I care to do the research, but I just can’t bring myself to believe LSU was outspent to a degree that would produce this level of ineptitude!

I still believe jay is a good coach.
Well, not believing so would make you retarded.

Unfortunately, he seems to be a coach who has fell captive to this new age style of analytics based coaching.
All coaches use analytics. He’s not unique in this. And there’s a reason for it. It’s about what works over the longterm. Doesn’t always work. But when it doesn’t for LSU, you pay infinitely more attention to it than you do when it doesn’t work for other teams. It’s one of the most frustrating things about being a part of a fanbase. In all sports. Most fans don’t have this self awareness that we watch our team in a much different way than we do others. All failures are magnified to us. I watch a lot and it of LSU football games with my dad these days. And at least once a game, I hear “Saban would have never let that happened.” Then I run off a list of about 10 times Saban’s teams did the exact same thing.

Jay seems to have lost trust in his decision making and relies solely on analytics over his own eye.
This is dumb. Jay, and every coach, uses a combination of analytics and “gut.” He’s not going on 100% analytics. That’s absurd. But it depends on the players and the game situation. I hate bunting. It’s almost always the wrong decision.
Like with runners on 1st and 2nd with no outs. Bunting them over to get runners on 2nd and 3d with 1 out. You are slightly more likely to score 1 run in that situation than you are with runners on 1st and 2nd with no outs. But significantly less likely to score 2+ runs and put up a crooked number. So usually, the best move is to not bunt. But if you have a 1-run lead late and have Paul Skenes on the mound, and a guy at the plate like Millazo who’s not a good hitter, but can get a bunt down, then bunting is probably the right call there.
(My biggest problem with a lot of Jay’s decisions to bunt over the years has been that he tries to bunt guys who clearly have no clue how to bunt and we just give up 1 or 2 strikes.)
quote:
All year long I have seen questionable decisions on pulling pitchers, pinch hittting, bunting, etc based on (in his own words) the analytics.
I think the biggest reason for that was because we had a bad roster. Not nearly enough Jimmies and Joes. So trusting the analytics over guys his “gut” didn’t trust, was probably the best strategy over the longterm. And when it failed, it wasn’t because he made the wrong decision, it was because he didn’t have the “dudes” to execute it what the analytics suggested.

I agree. But by the same token, some years you have to have the jimmies and the joes to trust “your gut” over the analytics. We didn’t have enough for either. I think he trod just about everything possible with this team. Out season wasn’t a reflection on bad in-game coaching decisions as much as it was we just didn’t have good enough players. His failures were in roster construction, not in in-game decisions. And that’s where any criticism should be levied.

What are you referring to, specifically?

I feel like we score 50 runs every single weekend. But we always allowed 60.
Offense did not let this team down.
Pitching and catching was the biggest issue.
Toss in the occasional defensive blunder and no amount of runs makes up for this bad rotation.

Is Jay gay? Not that there’s anything wrong with it
They're a bunch of weak and non-competitive effeminates that don't care about sustained and consistent success. (In all LSU Sports, not just baseball)
I have a rather strong dislike for these excuse spewing mediocrity loving cretins.
