Hitting(scoring) is our problem, not pitching

Over the last several seasons in the SEC, the average run total for the winning team is around 6.5 runs.

In only 1 loss in the SEC did we score more than 6 runs, a 11-7 loss to Texas.

In our other losses, hitting was terrible(clutch hitting) and runs lost the game.

Other losses we scored:

1 run once
2 runs 3 times
3 runs once
4 runs 4 times
5 runs once

In our SEC wins, pitching has only given up more than 6 runs once, and that was a 17-8 win over Miss St.

Pitching is taking care of business.

If this team expects to go to Omaha, they have to hit and score better.

Problems scoring, it’s like high school all over again.

Yep . Only 5 runs scored against SC that was allowing an average of 9.7 per game in SEC games.

Gave away two outs at 3rd, but that would possibly have been only 7 runs.

That was only the 5th time scar has given up five or fewer runs in an SEC game.

OP is dead on. This game was lost by the offense.

Exactly right. Our lack of hitting and dumb arse base running magnifies any pitching issues we have. If we score more runs…our pitching will shut the door.

It wasn’t all on hitting tonight. We had 11 hits on the road vs their best arms. We missed on a couple of opportunities with RISP, but losing two base runners on 3rd to stupid mistakes likely cost us 2-4 runs. Thats your ballgame tonight, not hitting alone.

South Carolina was ready to be put out of their misery, and we let them hang around because we didn’t play smart. Stupid base running mistakes, and ridiculous substitutions were very costly. Now we have to win the next 2 to secure a top 8. We have the talent to do it, but it puts a lot more pressure on Anderson and Eyanson now to feel like they have to pitch deep into the game to give us a chance to win the series. There is too much talent on this roster for our offense to be so inconsistent this late in the year.

The problem is Jared Jones. He is supposed to be the highlight of this offense and he keeps striking out. He is watching strikes and swinging at bad pitches. As long as Johnson keeps him in the top half of the lineup, the offense will sputter. Move him down in the lineup until he figures it out.

I’d try:
Stanfield
Curiel
Frey
Dickinson
Pearson/Brown
Jones
Hernandez/Arrimbide
Milam
Braswell

Or

Curiel
Frey
Dickinson
Pearson
Jones
Hernandez/Arrimbide
Milam
Braswell
Stanfield

Yeah...when they get cold, they stay cold. It's like the hitters all go into this collective slump. Where's that elite player who everyone knows will get that hit when they need it?

Like I said, hitting And scoring. We aren’t getting it done in all of our losses.

Scoring, aka timely hitting, is our problem. Of the 11 guys who regularly see ABs, 4 are below .300. On an average game night, it’s 6 of 9 over .300. That’s pretty solid. But GOOD GOD can we leave some dudes on base.

Relief pitching is absolutely a problem. Starters are not. We can have spotty hitting and poor relief, it doesn't have to just be one.

Its a shame Anderson and Eyanson are absolutely good enough to ride to a title but this team cant hit.

SCe’s pitcher for game 2 has a 6.71 ERA and a 1.65 WHIP with a .267 BAA.

He’s also a lefty, so he will be kryptonite to LSU’s lineup.

He struggled badly vs Arkansas, but he also went 2-5 last night with a run and an RBI. Let’s see how he does the rest of the series.

Agree 100%. Hitting is the problem, no team is putting up 10-15 runs regardless how bad the pitching is and we seem to have real trouble hitting and scoring runs. This team just does not seem to have the spark necessary to go all the way, in fact, if they were not at home I would question if they get out of the regional.

Which is supposed to be Jay’s specialty.

Which is all directly related to coaching.

If you ever watched the video of Augie going postal, because a player missed a sign, you’d understand how much coaching impacts players, and asst coaches doing what they are supposed to do.

This board thinks Jay is the end all, be all, but he’s not anywhere close to being what Skip, Augie, and the great ones were. His teams lack a lot of attention to details that ultimately win or lose games.
