Alright so I am a late 90s kid so I came to be an LSU fan around the saban-Miles regime. I hear my father talk about Hallman a lot and how awful he was, but what is the story of Mike Archer if anyone can update me? I want to hear from a fans perspective so why not come here haha, thanks guys

Dark nights always turn into bright days at some point. At least that's what I'm hoping

Outside of our upset wins over bama in 93, florida in 97 and Kevin Faulk's carrer, LSU fans do not talk about the 90s

Archer was a promotion from within. Had two good years including the Earthquake Game, and then the wheels came off.

History repeats itself. The good ole boys had a stranglehold on the program in the 90s. They have it back now in 2016.

Bad analogy. O may fail but completely different coach than Archer and both very different roads to become head coach.

Archer was recommended to be hired by Arnsbarger when he left. Archer was considered a bright young defensive coach. His first 2 years were successful with Arnsbarger's players. The bottom fell out when LSU was preseason ranked in the top 10 with Hodson as a heisman candidate.

He failed to recruit....it was ...bad. I wonder now if those classes would be top 30 if ranking sites existed like they do now. For all of Curley's faults that roster he inherited was awful and no one could have won with those players. Archer was in WAY over his head. I think based on where Archers career went he was probably a decent defensive coach. He lasted awhile as a coordinator for Kentucky and NC State and even spent some time with the Steelers.

Archer was on staff. Players and a lot of fans wanted him because of the programs renewed success and he got the head coaching job. Wasn't a terrible coach but not a good recruiter. Just wasn't ready. That really started the 90s slide.

The wheels and the axels all fell off at the same time caught on fire and went up in a hot blaze.

Spurrier was overlooked to promote the DC . Recommended by the outgoing coach who hired him at his Alma mater as head ball coach while the former LSU coach was the then AD.

I had friends on the team that asked me to go out and punt, because I played soccer. At that time the punter was Chad Kessler. He had come in as a big time recruit, but was underperforming big time.

So, I went out to practice...that was all I needed to see. It was a mess. It was so obvious why we were losing.

The next year, Curly was done. Kessler went on to become a fantastic punter being the first punter to average over 50 yards a punt for a season (50.3) with better coaching...a little better as it were.

That is my easy explanation of 1990-1995. Oh, and Florida 58 LSU 3...sat through the whole thing. Worst loss in Tiger Stadium history...which made 2003 so sweet.

I remember being thrilled to win 5 games. Think about that for a minute.

This.

Coach O is a totally different animal. He will keep the talent stocked. With decent or better coordinators LSU will be successful. Maybe or maybe not at the level we are wanting but successful.

Funny that game was. Started the whole chain of events that caused Saban to come to LSU.

I remember in the late 80's being so happy when they were on tv and I was actually able to watch. Figured they would probably lose but was just so happy to watch them on TV.

Bro, we lost to UF in 03 in Tiger Stadium.

I kid, but it's true. I know what you meant.

Stoval recruited great in the early 80's and was fired before he could reap the benefits of his recruiting, then in comes Arnsparger a great defensive minded coach who spent years with Shula and the Dolphins came in did a great job of coaching BUT not recruiting, then he leaves to become AD of Florida (I Believe) Archer takes over with the last of the Stoval recruits and Went 10-1-1 with a talented squad but a year later the Stoval recruits are now gone and the wheels came off.
