Speaking of northern. I don't know if my memory is off, but I could swear I remember him jumping over an offensive tackle and making a sack. Dude was an animal regardless

Recruiting rankings were a joke back then. They were based off of who was chasing whom. LSU was on a good run when Archer took over and rankings tended to be self-feeding from success ... unless it shows true colors on the field.

Archers recruiting was notoriously atrocious when it came to head to head with any big time program. FSU ate our lunch, and part of Bowden's pitch was to show a clip of Archer in all of his monotone glory giving a speech to players, believe it or not.

We had freaking Gary Pegues and Jamie Bice starting in our secondary in the SEC.

Curley could recruit but not coach or develop.

My contemporaries and I still refer to Archer (not Curley) as the Program Devastator.

Chad loupe wasn't class of 88 and he put up huge stats in high school but played at a small school and wasn't bad for us but Hallman shuffled QBS the first couple years like nobody's ever seen. Btw who were the big signees from 88 cause I don't remember anybody being that good maybe mawae and Todd kinchen but that's about it.

College football success is hinged on one very important attribute, recruiting. Archer sucked at it, and O is very good at it.

Wonder why Saban has multiple nattys, look at his #1 classes year after year...

The goal posts were actually brought back under Hallman for the centennial celebration game against Tulane in 93.

Archer makes Les look like Bill Belichick. A memorable moment was going for the tie against Emmit Smith and them and then losing.

Curley was just a dumpster fire.

Dinardo made a bigger improvement in win percentage than Saban but finally lost control of the team.

After Bo Rein died suddenly after being hired, LSU was in a bit of a tailspin in the 80s, digging the hole deeper with bad coaching hires.

As the joke goes, Stovall could recruit but couldn't coach. Arnsparger could coach but couldn't recruit. So they hired Archer, who could do neither. After Archer, we hired Curley and well... we know how that went. He took everything wrong with the Archer era and made it a hundred times worse. As bad as the early 90s were, it was really set up the successive bad hires in the 80s and increased meddling from boosters who thought they knew everything. HINT: they don't. LSU's hires stunk of nepotism, being cheap, or in Archer's case... both.

Honestly, Dinardo did a great job pulling us out of the disaster of six straight losing seasons. He got recruiting back up and scored perhaps the most important recruit in LSU history, Kevin Faulk, showing LSU could keep top players instate. His tenure crashed and burned over his insane loyalty to a terrible coordinator, and we brought in Saban to a then near-record contract. He walked into a fully stocked roster, a new AD that was not corrupt (sorry Joe Dean), and a booster network severely chastised over the past two decades.

Loup was indeed a Parade All American but I am pretty sure the #1 QB in the country that year was Chris Weinke

Mike Archer was the head coach of some really talented football teams in 1987 and 1988, and was successful with those teams. He lead LSU to a Gator Bowl victory in 1987 when the Gator Bowl was a big deal.

In 1988, even though LSU had the same conference record and beat Auburn earlier that year (Earthquake Game), Auburn went to the Sugar Bowl and LSU went to the Hall of Fame Bowl (Outback Bowl now) and lost a tough game to Syracuse.

In 1989 and 1990, LSU had leftover talent from the Arnsparger (sp?) days, but Mike Archer failed to bring in any big name talent to shore up the program, and LSU football fell apart. In 1989 he went 4-7, and in 1990 he went 5-6 but beat a really good A&M team, 17-8. Todd Kinchen single-handedly won that game. Well, that's the way I remember it, anyway.

Archer was promoted from within instead of hiring hot young coach named Steve Spurrier. This is nothing new.

The real turning points in Archer's demise were losses at Ohio State and at home against Miami ... both during the 1988 season. The team played uninspired football against Syracuse in the Outback Bowl. The decline and fall had begun.

How bad was Hallman? The 1992 season was horrible, ending at 2-9. There were home losses to Colorado State and Kentucky, and a national TV loss at Arkansas.

The dark ages of LSU football were 1989-1994. I give Dinardo some credit for bringing back respectability to the program. He couldn't sustain it, however.

There was nothing wrong with talent in the late 80's early 90's. I am in no way saying it was as good as today but it wasn't bad either. Everyone of the them teams had enough to talent to go 8-3. The problem with these teams was coaching and leadership from the head coach. The Archer era was a product of him just not being ready to be a head coach. Curly was from the fact that his entire regime was fricked up and the players knew it and had no respect for him. They would do the craziest things during games. For example they came up with the idea of rotating the entire O-line every 10 plays. One game against Auburn they start the game and drive inside the 10 and have 1st and goal. They then proceed to pull the entire starting line and insert the 2nd string despite the momentum the starters had. result, was 3 downs and a missed FG. Talent wasn't the issue it was coaching and program mismanagement.

No comparison to those days. I been around since the early 60's and have never seen a fan base as unified and excited at games in many years.
O might not have been my first choice but he will do especially if he surrounds himself with great coaching talent. So far he has and is doing a good job.
