Not every player will have 1.50 era and 10 KOs in 7 innings.

He looked uncomfortable and his arm slot looks different. Id like to see him start another game or 2, maybe mid week.

And Walker shouldn't have gotten hurt.

Did you watch at all last season? This isn't his first start.

It's his first start this season. Some players actually improve from season to season.

When Mainieri started talking up Hess as a starter, I knew we didn’t have many quality arms. Hess is a Rick Greene type one trick pony worth about two innings. We’re in trouble.

Dude it is opening weekend chill out. Maybe they have good arms maybe they don't we will find that out over the next couple of months. I think they have quality arms, they just don't have experienced ones. Give it some time before we push the panic button.

It will be interesting to see what Paul decides to do after this weekend

Where do you idiots come from? He had a horrible outing and will, without a doubt, be given plenty more chances as a starter.

As a starter or a closer, if he struggles to throw strikes, like he did tonight, he will not be any good. So how would moving him, after one bad outing, make him better?

Who are you to be calling anyone a moron? Hess objectively doesn’t have starter stuff or a starter mindset. There’s a reason that Mariano Rivera stayed in the pen his entire career. Some guys are just not meant to be starters and work much better out of the pen late in the game, and guys who rely on throwing super fricking hard, having one plus movement pitch that requires a ton of effort I.E. a hard slider, and acting like a psycho and being ultra pumped up and emotional on the mound generally fit into that category. It’s just not possible to keep that up for 7 innings unless your control is insanely good and his isn’t.

He’s a truly phenomenal bullpen guy. Literally was put on this earth to be a MLB closer. Let’s be realistic about that though and accept that most guys generally can’t do both. You are clueless about baseball if you argue otherwise, I’m not saying that he could absolutely never turn into an alright starter, but he is designed to shut teams down for 2 innings and that’s where he should be.

You are not honestly looking at a kid in the first game of his second season and telling me you absolutely just know he is a bullpen pitcher.

Umm yeah, it’s still possible to make changes that don’t involve Hess

I understand that most people on this board literally don’t know jack shite about baseball, but I do and you basically just asked the football equivalent of “are you ACTUALLY telling me that after one season you can tell me that Greedy Williams is a cornerback and not a defensive end?”

That’s exactly what I’m saying. Hess is a closer in pretty much every metric at this point. He absolutely should not be starting and he should be put back in the pen where he’s an All-American caliber prototypical closer.

He just seems to thrive off juices.. can’t really get that same hype starting a game as he does finishing it. Looks like he’s holding back and guiding it. He doesn’t look like himself. He will get a few more opportunities as a starter, but I sure hated seeing him struggle and left in that long.

Understandable, which is why he will get another opportunity. However, he just seems totally different. I hope he isn’t ruined by this. I don’t think he will be. He was the most dominating arm for an inning last season.

If this ruins him then he’s not a real competitor.

Yeah yeah we know. You and everyone else on this board played d1 baseball if not AA ball. Blah blah fricking blah. I don’t know enough to say Hess is a for sure starter. But I know enough that you are full of shite.
