Here’s what happened Saturday, and this year

I like this team, they have grit, tenacity, and some sure fire NFL talent on the field but lack in areas. When you have a team, and record, like we have this year, you must accept it for what it is. Fraudulent, GOOD, but fraudulent. For the first month of the season even our wins were in comeback fashion, certain areas of all three phases looked suspect we we were taking it because of the Ws.
The game against Tennessee is an accurate representation of the worst case game for this team, and how they play against top caliber opponents more often than how they played against bama.
Then a victory against ole miss, expectations increase despite an ugly showing in the first quarter and sporadic offense.
Then Gump. Best case scenario for how this team can play. A rarity and not their norm. Expectations are now through the roof, an overreaction.
Fast forward through Arkansas and take that for what it’s worth and move onto AM. Like it or not, they are as talented if not more talented than we are and we ran out of magic. Sometimes, you just get beat plain and simple. Their players played better and their coaches coached better. Does this mean Kelly is bad and the season a failure? Of course not, it’s just football. Sometimes you lose, and having the objectivity to realize that and still recognize this season and this team as a success is necessary. There’s no excuse to play like we did Saturday but there’s no need to make more of it than what it is either.
Excited for the SECCG and Bowl, then next season.
TLDR: team over performed all year and it caught up with them for 60 minutes in Aggieland.

I think this is a logical way to explain the season.
I will say it doesn’t excuse the product they put on the field last Saturday.

I agree with your post. I think it’s even simpler than that. We don’t have a lot of depth. We have a team that is physically and mentally fatigued. Because this is your one, we don’t have system leaders who have lived and grown up multiple years as players in the system yet. as a result, we came out flat against Tennessee. We came out flat against Texas A&M. We went flat as soon as Mason Smith injured himself against Florida State. We are a lot closer to being mentally tough and prepared to make a run, but probably need two lore recruiting classes for depth.

Florida and Alabama put some of the worst teams in years on the field this year. Their names are the only reason those wins are hyped up this year. Ole Miss win doesn’t look that great now also.

Luckily the new rules about incoming scholarships and the transfer portal has made it to where you can reshape your roster very quickly and boost numbers. Only question is how much it affect cohesiveness. Some roster spots will need to be filled with experienced players from elsewhere but getting a massive freshman class for Kelly to mold is paramount to the 5 year health of the program.

2 true freshman tackles. Roster put together in a few months from 39 scholarship players. Key injuries to Smith and Dellenger. Emery coming back from a 2 year layoff. Team battling through the flu last couple of weeks. Josh Williams knee injury…Still playing for the SEC championship against a team that struggled against Missouri, Kentucky, and Ga Tech

This season feels a lot like 2005. We had Katrina completely disrupted the preseason. Then we traveled to Arizona at the last min, took two weeks off then played every week for 11 games in a row. ASU was a last second come from behind win, aub and Bama were OT wins and Ark and UF were both close wins. We literally just ran out of steam against GA in the sec title game. Those dudes were just physically exhausted. They started the season that way. Remember Pelini talking about all the guys needing ivs on the sideline during the Tenn game? (F Rick Clausen)
It feels a little like that except instead of a crazy situation it’s crazy lack of depth. People forget that our d lines in 2007 and 2011 were so dominant partly because we rotated so many guys. The starters didn’t have to play every snap every game.

Rebuilding teams have ups and downs. A good coach will most likely win a couple he shouldn't win and lose a game or 2 he shouldn't lose. These guys don't know how to handle success yet. Kelly is building that part of the culture.

Bama has the highest avg kid recruited on their roster, ever, since it's been tracked like 15-20 years. They handpicked nfl kids last 2 yrs in the portal, on top of rolling #1 classes every yr, at mlb, cb, rb, lt, wr. They have a Heisman qb. What are you talking about?

I think it just boils down to this team being way more comfortable mentally in the underdog role rather than the hunted role. That’ll change once we start playing to the standard BK wants more consistently.

The team lacks depth. You have some DLine playing 90% of the snaps. You’re gonna see losses like this. It is what it is.

100% agree.
The margin of error with this team has been razor thin all year due to lack of depth and overall talent level. People get caught up in “star gazing” sometimes.

Somewhat true but coming out completely flat in two big time rival games is bizarre and really unacceptable, and kinda unexpected

Well stated. And when I look at the teams we lost to outside of Florida State, I think the talent level of those teams, particularly with regard to depth, is better than LSU by a bit. I know people like to point to A&Ms record, understandably, but ignore how stacked they are talent-wise.
Alabama, A&M, and Tennessee were probably the deepest teams we have faced by a long shot and we went 1-3.
Now we'll face another team at that level in Georgia, except they are probably as complete a team as there is in the NCAA. Here is to the Tiger's breaking even.
