She doesn’t look comfortable playing PG, which is to be expected when you were a shoot first 2 guard all your life.
Hopefully it will click for her eventually but right now she is the best option Kim has at that position.

It is important that Velez develops. Van Lith is playing out of position at point guard, but she has to, because Poa cannot score at all. I am sure that Mulkey will start playing some zone defense in order to lessen the strain on the six players that are playing all of the minutes. Velez and Del Rosario have to become effective players.

HVL has been the ultimate team player since she arrived in Baton Rouge. She arrived as a scoring guard, but has been fine with looking to be a pass first point guard. She knew coming into LSU that she needed to improve in this area to help her in the WNBA, and she also knew this is what a team loaded with scorers needed. It hasn’t been perfect, but the season is far from over, and there is still plenty of time for Van Lith and this team to gel before the NCAAT.
Just stay patient.

HVL averaged 15 ppg last season at Louisville. With all the adjustment to playing point guard and on a team full of scoring machines, she’s averaging 12. She will probably average around 15 this season.
I thought she’d develop quicker with specific pg skills and no, she’s not Khayla Pointer or Alexis Morris as a playmaker. But she can score so things even out. I have no problem with her shooting more.
Nothing wrong with having a point guard who can score. Joe Dumars, Bob Cousy, Nate Archibald, etc. all did. This is the number one offense in WBB. If something ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

She'll figure it out or she'll be pulling Splinters out of her

HVL struggled horribly against the press, needs to be FJ. FJ is just a ridiculous athlete. Her quick hop shot blocking ability against the midrange jumper catches shooters off guard. She is the best player on the floor sans scoring(I know that's a huge piece I'm just saying). Williams shooting reminds me of Kobe.

This!
And she is a gym rat that will work on her deficiencies. I think she will be much better come post-season.
I agree with the poster that Johnson and Williams would be a good combination to break the press at times.

She can shoot. Should not be a point.

All this handwringing over HVL as a distributor is getting to be a lot of crap. We have a lot of big scorers but guess what? They’re all fricking scoring!
Nobody is being left out. The starting five are all averaging double figures with Reese, Morrow, and Williams averaging close to 20. Smith averaged 13 off the bench before she was injured. This is the top scoring offense in the country so guess the frick what? The fricking ball is getting distributed whether it’s by the book or not.

It’s not the distributing and everyone getting points. They are all getting enough points. It’s the turnovers and the defense she is struggling with. I am sure she will figure it out by post season.

Let’s not forget she missed like 5 non conference game with her foot injury that would have helped in her development there as well.

I’m more concerned about the starters having to play almost the entire game .

ADR needs to start getting more minutes. There are going to be games where Reese or Morrow gets in foul trouble and she’ll have to go in there. Losing Smith was such a huge blow.

No doubt. She’s a stud.
Please tell me what she has done so far this season to say she's a stud? She's the most disappointing player on this team so far. Whether it's because she's playing out of position or it being she has been hurt. She is way too slow to be playing PG.

I agree. If you remember back at the beginning of the season CKM said HVL was learning the PG position. It is difficult to master but she is such a great player, we haven't noticed the difficulty yet. The SEC brings better competition and OM prides themselves on defense just like LSU.
I am more concerned with depth especially after the foul trouble yesterday. The officials are so inconsistent. I wish the SEC would provide more professional development for them or get rid of the ones that show the most inconsistency. You know the metrics exist for them to review.

quote:people must think this is a much deeper squad than it is. Poa has most of the same problems at point guard that HVL does and the only one after them is an unproven freshman. In short, she has to play a lot of minutes are we really are in trouble.

HVL is 100% playing out of position and the reality is she likely isn't going to get significantly better with her ball handling but she has been a team player giving up so many open shots to give the ball to others. With that said the offense is extremely potent and you have 5 players who can all score 20+on any given night and they still have one of the best offenses in the country despite not having a true PG.
The biggest issue with this team Is on the defensive end. They have to crack down on it, we have seen glimpses of outstanding defensive play (see VT game) but it comes and waves (a quarter) then disappears at times. So that will be the #1 priority the remainder of the year. Of course LSU running out only 6, sometimes 7 bodies a night also is contributing to the sloppiness on the defensive end. The starting 5 was so gassed yesterday in the 2nd half while Ole Miss rolled out 10 bodies and constantly rotated.
