And if Nick punted instead of 3 field goal tries, would we even be talking about this?

herbstreit was bitching that oregin dropped to far. They have 2 losses. no way around it.

so I guess the fact that Bama could get no closer than they did to MISS the field goals was by design on the part of the great Saban?
Like LSU's D had nothing to do with that, or even in OT Bama was trying a long field goal. They never smelled the end zone! I'd hate to see how bad we'd have beat them if we had outplayed them just a little bit!

If Bama made just one of those field goals, you do know that LSU would have done something different than the plays they did right?

EVERYONE is saying Bama outplayed us...
this REALLY is starting to remind me of 2003, when everyone was saying "Georgia outplayed LSU, Georgia is better" in the buildup to our SEC Championship game.
And we all know how that turned out.
History will repeat itself.

Nope, they will be saying but so and so didn't get in and if they did, they would have beat LSU. Everytime it is some bullshite like this and I can't stand it. Give us fuking credit! Unfortunately they never will.

I will put it like this.
Offense: Alabama (slight edge)
Defense: Tie
Special Teams: LSU (Big Advantage)
KH does not consider special teams as a part of the game. Miles says over and over he wants to have good play on all three phases of the game "Offense, Defense, Special Teams." Alabama moved the ball with their offense, but could not use their special teams to win. Same thing with Oregon. Special Teams are a HUGE, HUGE part of this LSU team.

I'm with you. Why all of these analyst have seemingly forgotten about about resume and who/ how we have beat everyone - but Bama. Like you said - special teams is a huge part of college football - just look at this past weekend.
But to say Bama outplayed LSU all game is just ignorant and wrong.
LSU
Total yards: 239
Kick return yards: 49
Punt return yards: 0
Interception return yards: 33
Total: 321
Less Penalty yards: 56
Net Yards: 265
Bama
Total yards: 295
Kick return yards: 49
Punt return yards: 0
Interception return yards: 14
Total: 358
Less Penalty yards: 73
Net Yards: 285

I "love" the 3 missed field goals argument. I am curious as to why media and a lot of Alabama fans ignore the fact that Foster has missed 7 out of 9 field goals this season. In other words, he misses 78% of his attempts. He has not made a FG this season from more than 46 yards. He has made only 2 of 5 from 40 to 46 yards (i.e., he fails at that range 60% of the time). Shelley is reliable in his range, but is 0% for attempts of more than 40 yards.
Foster was 1 for 4 prior to the LSU game, having missed at 53, 42, and 53. He made a 45 yard attempt against Tennessee. He missed a 44 yard attempt and made a 46 yard try against LSU. He misses a 52 yard try in OT. Shelley tried a 49 yard attempt against LSU. He has never made a try of longer than 37 yards.
The best odds at the time seemed to give Bama a 25% chance on any field goal of between 40 and 46 yards, and near 0% chance on anything longer. While Foster did make a 46 yard attempt (against the odds), it seems a little silly to argue Alabama lost because of bad luck because they missed 3 field goal tries in regulation.

So if LSU tried 3 field goals from 70 yards, could we say we outplayed Alabama since we missed 3 field goals?

Herbie can't vote for the voters. He doesn't hold as much power as you suggest. The voters don't want the rematch. If Okie St wins, they're in.

Herbie likes to here Herbie talk - and is under the mistaken presumption that everyone else likes to hear him blather also. No question he projects his bias in his reporting.

If we got outplayed, how the heck did we end up with that "W" and bama got the "L"? Oh and did I mention it was at their house?
Posted on 11/21/11 at 2:36 pm to gOLDTiger
I agree with Herbie on this one, since I was a kid I've used the number of field goals attempted stat to determine who the best team was in a game...For a while I did switchover to average distance gained on first down as the comparison, but I'm back to field goals attempted
Posted on 11/21/11 at 2:44 pm to AlaTiger
the scoreboard says LSU outplayed Alabama, so IDGAF what Herbie says.
It was a football game, not a piano recital.

Post 2000 milestone: why is the fact that LSU plays NFL level special teams ignored? The last time I checked 3 phases are still in; offense, defense, and ST. LSU is excellent at 2 of 3 phases and good in the other. I'm so sick of LSU getting no credit although we are 1 in every single poll, 11-0 and dominating opponents.
