Not impossible at all. Smoke was fully capable but he treated the LSU job like it was a reward for a long successful career. You can’t succeed at the level LSU expects if you aren’t a killer.
Absolutely nailed it!!!

Can you not enjoy the positive energy of the victory and just celebrate with the team and fans this evening.

There were reports a couple of months ago that he was a candidate for the ULM coaching job. You think they might invite him to give a motivational speech to our baseball team?

I liked Smoke. He pretty much ran the Skip Bertman baseball camp when I went. I don't even remember much of his coaching career but I would think Skip had something to do with him getting the job.

And he wasn't on their 95 roster.
Sheets pitched in the 1999 regional at the Box.

Smoke and Skip were very close. You would think they remain in touch, including visits.

tried to burn it down on his way out, he really shouldn't be allowed back....but I think he's been offered to be a part of things and declined.
only really got the job out of skip's loyalty....and being one of the few that would take the job and allow skip to keep the camp money, which was a bigger deal back then.

Laval had no discipline on his teams

Didn’t Smoke get to Omaha twice in 5 years? Pretty damn strong but, yeah, we were pretty spoiled after Skip

Have seen this mentioned a few times. What did he do exactly?

Threw a lit cigar in a pile of papers on the AD office admin desk?

Fun fact, there is (or was) a poster on this site that was a pitcher whose childhood dream was to pitch at LSU. He was invited to visit LSU during Smoke's tenure but apparently Smoke was unaware. This pitcher walks into Smoke's office to introduce himself and Smoke tells him to get the frick out of his office. This pitcher went on to start in MLB and won a world series... probably would have been a top 5 all-time pitcher at LSU.

I believe I heard that baseball camp is 100% how Smoke got the job.

And in a hilarious coincidence, he finished his MLB career with 69 wins and 4.20 ERA.

Got slapped with injuries, but what is your point? Big Ben was 78-70 with a 3.91...is he not an all-time great at LSU?

Yep, I know many are aware he posted here but not sure how many know that Smoke story
