Has any basketball coach ever done a better job of recruiting than CMM?

Obviously it's hard to measure such things and it'd be silly to mean this literally, but I can't remember being this excited about basketball recruiting, especially with everything the program is facing.

We're gonna be a threat next year no matter what we are or aren't eligible for, and then just imagine what CMM can do once sanctions are lifted.

Part of it is having to recruit an entire roster. That has helped the intrigue. I am still overly surprised he was able to assemble this roster the way he has. Very impressive start.

Not sure if anyone at a top tier D1 school has ever had to recruit an entire team when he got the job.

And for that reason I agree.

Steve Fisher recruited the Fab Five. Say what you want about them but they went to the national championship with 5 starters from that class both their freshman and sophomore seasons.

I think it's definitely unprecedented, but it's also the first time a coach has had such a blank slate with the NIL and transfer portal as tools to work with.

It’s going to be become more common to overturn an entire roster in an offseason. Arkansas only has 2 returning players and is a consensus top 5 team

Impressive what he's been able to do under the circumstances.

Doesn't Calipari have to do that on a regular basis because of all the one and dones?

This was a legendary job by CMM, have a feeling whatever we get from the NCAA won’t be as bad as the naysayers think. Could be wrong but for us to get these players to come here in such short notice, someone at LSU has to know SOMETHING.

Dale Brown comes to mind....but seriously, CMM is doing a great job under the circumstances.

Steve Fisher got the job right before NCAA tourney with Fab Five as Freshan when coach took ASU job. Bo said a Michican man will be coaching these kids in the tourney. At least that us how I remember it.

You’re thinking of the 1989 tourney when Michigan won the national title with Glen Rice, Loy Vaught, Terry Mills, Sean Higgins and Rumeal Robinson. Bill Frieder announced he was taking the ASU job just before the tourney so Bo forced him to leave immediately and Fisher coached the team to the title getting the job permanently. The Fab 5 was 3 years later.

Amazing what he was able to do.

But let’s remember that Wade got a lot of these guys to LSU initially.

I think it’s a combination of making the move when we did, MM doing a great job, and WW leaving us with some quality guys already interested.

I know people want to say that Wade left us in a shite position, but I think this proves he didn’t really affect us much at all.

Would we be worse off had we waited to make a move? It’s possible. I’m loving how it’s all turning out.

It's up there. Times are different than they ever have been before and CMM is definitely one of the first people to be in a situation like this. He's fighting transfer portal but he's also helped by it at the same time. Also fighting the NIL bullshite going on as well as the obvious pay for play that has been going on at blue bloods.

He gets an A+

I think he's done a GREAT job...and that we are going to be below .500 in conference.

Yes the number of spots he had to fill and what he had done with those spots on paper looks great. Historically I do not think this could have been done without the portal, not to the same quality for sure. You would be holding tryouts from the student body in the pmac.
