In terms of "wasted talent" - Ben Simmons. Dude was the #1 pick of the NBA draft and LSU couldn't find away to sneak into the field of 68. Absolutely pathetic.

This and its not close.

Patrick Peterson, Leonard Fournette come to mind right away. Wanted to say Honey Badger, but he got an SEC Title.

why do people always say a talent was "wasted" if said player didn't win a national championship?
I just feel that is a very short-sighted way of looking at things.
These are all team sports that require more than one player. And in a sport like basketball, in a winner go home tournament, hard to say talent was wasted if they got bounced. Yes, Johnny Jones squandered talent not even making the tournament.
In baseball, an SEC title and appearance in Omaha isn't wasting talent either.

Its wasted if the player didn't even get close enough to "sniff" a championship or play a large role in putting his teaming in position to win a championship.

Did they even win an NCAA tournament game when Shaq was on the team? I'm trying to remember....
Dale Brown could take a bunch of random dudes and motivate them to a Final Four. But you give him half an NBA team and he didn't know what to do with it. (Vernel Singleton and Harold Boudreaux were on those teams and they were solid, solid players. I'm sure they ended up in the D League or playing overseas)

Hands down it was Shaq

Tyrann Mathieu as well, although his is more speculative on if he could have pushed LSU over the top in 2012.
There is zero doubt in my mind that he would've been there to make a play on the Yeldon screen pass

Yes, Shaq dominated BYU, I think he set a NCAA record for blocks in a single NCAA game, maybe 14 or so. Then we ran into Indiana. Bobby Knight vs Dale Brown never ended well for LSU.

Just because a player is not on a team which wins a national championship, that doesn't mean anything is "wasted." Frankly I'm offended by the question.

Pistol Pete. The greatest college player of all time.

We also lost to Jason Kidd and Arizona one year.
I can't remember if we beat Texas and Chris mihm that year or lost to them another year in the tournament.
