Coached by Rick Huckabay who went on to coach under Dale Brown and then at Marshall.

I remember those days well. I was at Bunkie through summer of 72, so I wasn't there for the 73 games. My English teacher's son played center for Rapides, he was 6'1" and the tallest starter.

I’m from Rapides (but not Lacompte)

This thread hits close to home.

Was Huckaby part of the Tom Curry deal that worked out so well for us?

Graduated in 2001 there, was thinking the same thing. Unfortunately, my years playing we didn't do as good as the 73 team lol.

No. Howard Carter was his first D-1 player and Howard was in 9th grade Huck’s first year and had been previously recruited.

No Huck’s first year at Redemptorist was when Howard was in 8th grade at Park Forest Jr High. Howard and I played AAU ball for Baton Rouge Lakers and were both recruited to go to Redemptorist. I lived 2 blocks from Catholic High and was headed there until Huck came into the picture and we both flopped. Howard wanted to go to Glen Oaks with his buddies and cousin Stanky Lee.

We won 72 games in a row at Redempt, won State in 77 and 78 and lost in finals in 79 to Peabody. Huck was a great coach but a terrible person and adulterer with young women, and the biggest hypocrite I’ve ever known.

But what’s new, lots of coaches fit that bill.

Yes Huck recruited Curry to LSU, then to Marshall when that didn’t work and Huck landed the HC job there. He let Curry live with him which triggered an investigation which uncovered more and Huck was blackballed from NCAA coaching. His son Ricky was playing ball across the river in Ohio so he went there as HC.

He recruited me and I played for him at Redemptorist in the hey day, and the last time I saw him was in late 1990’s when he told me that he offered to do the color analyst on LSU radio to Joe Dean and Dean refused him. Sadly, he died a broken man. He had a rough life, father died when he was young but he was a huge hypocrite but a very good coach other than that.

If Hannibal had a jump shot he would be an all SEC player. Thing is he can hit the shot he just doesn’t take them. Wish he would . Then defense couldn’t sag as much and clog the lane.
