it's not just that

we need him to do more than in-line blocking near the LOS

We won a Natty with Thad Moss blocking his absolute dick off AND making clutch plays.

If Arik is soft, peace.

Hes been running 5 yard hitches all season. You don't have Calvin Johnson running 5 yard hitches. Utter ineptitude by E and linehan.

good receiving TEs are much more WR than blocker these days

Wasn't that the reason Carter lined up as TE, so Arik could be more of a wide out receiver?

If you watch the games you can see how often WRs are tasked to block for running backs or fir bubble screens. Blocking is a vital part of the spread. And yes the TE has to block, chip or whatever as part of the overall package. Moss did a great job of this and I suggest Mr. Gilbert to watch his tapes. If he can mimic Moss with his talent he would really excell.

Lastnight I posted a text pic from my source who plays on the team that Arik wants out cuz he wants to play more of a wide out position.

The kid doesnt want to be a tight end.
Seems like news is picking up on it more so this morning.

I think Orgeron needs to go, but I have no problem with the coaches trying to coach kids to maximize their potential.

Gilbert isn't a wide receiver no matter how much he might want to be one. He has the potential to be one of the best tight ends of all time, though. Right up there with Gronk & Gonzales.

Gilbert played his best game of the year on Saturday, IMO, in part because of his awesome blocking in the run game.

I don't know what he was "sold" in recruiting, but he's blocked a lot less so far this year than Moss did last year and that's been one of the biggest issues with our blocking. I wouldn't be surprised if the coaches have asked him to do more blocking in the last few games for the betterment of the team.

But, I really don't think this is the issue, anyway. I think there's a lot of truth in ZVR's tweet last night, combined with a dismal losing season and what appears to be a less than ideal (possibly toxic) team environment.

Moss isn't the same type of TE as Gilbert.

Gilbert reminds me so much like Evan Ingram and oJ Howard.
Ok great. That doesnt change that in 2019, not 1980, there was an innovative offense that had a TE that blocked.

Are you under the impression LSU is running the ball or Gilbert is in pass pro 90 percent of the time because that is so far from the truth. I don’t know the splits but I am willing to bet LSU throws more than they run and Gilbert isn’t in pass pro very often.

i'm not arguing the TE should never block, but that the modern TE (with a guy like gilbert) is much more WR than TE

even his blocking should primarily be similar to that of a WR (going against smaller DBs and help on LBs but not an inline guy most of the time)

also, our offense isn't nearly as innovative in 2020 and one major area you can see this is how we used the TE. we were supposed to get the evolved TE that is much better than Moss for that offense but the first issue was missing the offense

He has the third most catches in the conference at the TE position with 35. Behind only Jalen Wydermeyer - 40 and Kyle Pitts - 36.

He would be a very good WR but he has the potential to be an all time great TE.

He’s not a WR. Doesn’t posses the ability to beat elite DB’s at next level. Not quick enough not fast enough. His greatest attributes is his ability to play inside create mismatch with LB and S. But with this position he must be willing to block some. He’s like the 6’10 guys in baskets now they all just want to stay outside and shoot 3’s. It’s everywhere now everyone has there own wants and to hell with what’s best for the team.

What the hell does this guy think the duties are for a TE? Do I think they should run more designed plays for him? Absolutely, but that doesn’t mean you go off and pout like a little baby. These players these days are some damn prima donnas. Irks the shite out of me.

This. I am sure Gilbert was sold a bill of goods. But his production has been one of the rare times that I thought a freshman was actually being used as they may have wanted.

Hmmm, might want to use a better example b/c Jimmy got two more fat contracts from other NFL teams after he left the Saints for catching passes only.

exactly

even if gilbert is a complete bust in blocking, he can still be a valued piece in the NFL. that means there is no reason why he shouldn't be valued in college

Thaddeus Moss blocked a lot last year. It’s what makes you a Tight End. Wide Receivers block a lot too, for that matter.

Good grief.
