re: Gerry Dinardo regrets his last 2 years. Raion Hill responds

He became paranoid after the Florida win because Sports Illustrated gave all the credit to the coordinators. So, he got rid of the coordinators and hired YES MEN, including his good buddy Lou Tepper. Lou Tepper then proceeds to give us the worst two defenses in the history of LSU football and he refused to fire him.
I knew it was time for Dinardo and Tepper to go when I heard Dinardo on the radio after the Georgia blowout saying that it was Tepper's plan to have Thomas Dunson (a SLOW white LB who had no business playing college football) cover Champ Bailey on pass plays. No coach could possibly be that f*cking stupid.

Word around the campfire is the worse they played the harder Dinardo drove 'em. Practices were always full-pad, long and ferocious. That may work in 2-a-days but I suspect as the season wore on, players just started to hate him. Hell, when he was fired and they went out and lit Arkansas up, you could see that the entire team had a renewed energy. Hunter takes over, practice in shells, bench Booty, profit.

You can make an argument this was the worst athletic hire in LSU history.

Agree. I think he actually was good for LSU. We had just come out of some disappointing seasons. He brought back the magic and also Lou Fricking Tepper. Lou got his job. Dinardo was similar to Les in that he was pig headed and refused to make a change at DC. That in my opinion is what got him fired. And I bet he would still never admit that he should have fired Tepper.

Very nice guy.
Maybe with fans and years after football.
But the several players I personally know
said he was a dick and very condescending.
They still feel this way years after they played for him.

Although he couldn't KEEP The Magic, he did bring it back. Also fought to get back our beloved home white jerseys.
I thank Gerry for the good things he did while here. And there were some very good times, considering when he arrived it was the darkest time in the history of LSU Football.
Also helped bring us what is now known as Ruffino's.

I really think he laid the initial groundwork for Saban eventually coming here and building LSU back to what it is now.
I mean there's no denying this, the key figures on that SEC championship team were DiNardo recruits. He laid the foundation just had no clue how to build the house, but who knows if Saban shows any interest in this job had he not seen a pretty talented roster to help jump start "the process"

I had two conversations with Joe Dean about DiNardo. The last conversation lasted almost an hour. Joe listened and made his counterpoints as to why he should not terminate DiNardo. I made my argument as to why he should. I take no credit. DiNardo was let go a short time later.

As far as former players hating on Dinardo, the above game against Arkansas might give us a clue. Not only were the players worn down and dejected, but they probably realize more than ever that their talent was underutilized due to bad coaching.
And after the nuclear bomb 2019 offense, I bet even more players are sitting there thinking “frick, that could’ve been us!” Dinardo had three good years and brought in some good talent. No, the 1998-1999 rosters were not NC caliber but it was good enough to drum teams like Ark.

Played high school ball with Theo Williams and Johnny Mitchell. Remember them always talking bout how much of an a-hole he was. Wasnt very well thought of....

Tepper’s basic philosophy was to let the WR catch the ball, then proceed to tackle him. Truly brilliant.
Rough years.
Rough years.

Louisiana was always a hotbed of talent. Every coach had to know this. At one time it was Grambling. LSU was the sleeping giant that Dinardo stirred, but it hit the snooze button until Saban came with a blow horn.

it was either your conversation or Mark Emmert telling him he was going to fire Gerry
I think even before his death he maintained he wanted to give Gerry one more year

One of the more random 2020 storylines has been former Tigers ripping DiNardo publicly. Didn't see that coming.
It's like they all woke up from a 20 year coma.

Dinardo was a long time ago.
Dinardo last coached a game on November 13th, 1999. He was fired 2 days later, on November 15th, and offered the option to coach the last game and declined.
For the 2020 edition of the LSU football team, only the seniors and some of the juniors were born prior to that date.
A significant portion of LSU "fans" want to give Saban 100% credit for a turnaround job that was at least 40 to 50 percent Dinardo's work. So, while his flaws are well known and lamented, many of our fans (mainly the Sabanistas and those too young to remember the 1990s) seem unwilling or unable to offer credit where credit is due.

His 98 and 99 staffs as a whole were horrible. Hal Hunter and Bernstein were the only two that ended up with decent careers. Hunter had a year or two as an OC, but otherwise never held a position higher than OL coach. Pretty sure Bernstein never held a position higher than DB coach.

Which is strange. As a fan I can see that the program was in a much better position when he left than when he came in.
Maybe time has softened him (though was very amicable when I met him) maybe doing a little broadcasting has helped him but he was given every opportunity to try to re write things or at least take a little credit which he reasonably could have and he refused to. In fact he was complimentary to hallman leaving players for his success rather than taking a little credit for 2001 which he was teed up by WAFB to do. Hard to see the prick that some players have made him out to be.

An Ark team that was ranked and playing good football under Nutt. I remember the game...LSU was supposed to lose by, like, a hundred. And they just blew the doors off the pigs. You could def see the wasted athleticism under Dinardo
