He could hit .330 with .500 OBP.

100%

28 bombs hard to top because he'd get walked more, but he could show more and more discipline at the plate.

Maybe you just need to not take everything a coach says in public about his team to heart. Why would he not mention things like that to try and create a confidence in his team to play better. Maybe a fan has crazy expectations for what he says but if a player sees it then they know he has the most confidence in a player and also the team as a whole when making comments like that.

love Herring and would love for him to return next year. But he’s got a long way to go if he’s going to crack the top 10 of all time LSU pitchers.

He had an all American season this year and didn’t get the credit or recognition he deserves for it. He was, by far, the best relief pitcher in the SEC this season. And potentially in the country. What he did to SEC opponents was rivaled really only by Hagen Smith.

I know it’s a smaller sample size since he’s a reliever, but if he comes back and performs similarly next season he absolutely could be one of the best.

He said he had that potential and Jay wasn't the only one who said that. Potential doesn't always translate, though.

Jay also said, while LSU was sitting at 3-12 in the SEC, that LSU would be in first place in any other conference in the country.

Do you think that wasn't true or that he didn't believe that?

I watched the interview... JJ seemed a bit down and uninspired the entire time. He did not seem upbeat about anything. Something seemed out of whack...

So now all our fans will think Jones and Herring are staying if they aren’t picked in the top 50. I’m sure he would tell them to go if that’s the case but they could still decide to leave if the money is right and they get selected after top 50.

Same with saying Kling could be the next Crews. Sure he could be, but our fans hear “Hey, Jay said Kling is going to play like Dylan Crews this year.” He just gets excited about his guys and sees their potential. Plus recruits like to hear a coach talk like that.

Cool. If Herring comes back next year surely Jay won’t miss a super regional for the third time in his four years at LSU.

People hit like that and come back the next yr all the time. He has things he can improve.

I bet he returns unless he really is a top 50 pick.

I don't agree with this take. I think he has stock and if he shows anywhere near the massive improvement in year 2 to year 3 he already showed, he could be picked in a spot similar to Jacob Berry, 1.6. I don't think Berry being a switch hitter and standing at third base with four left feet makes him a markedly different prospect than Jones.

I do respect your opinion though and his profile isn't overly unique. My point is if Jones' ups his ability to make contact even more, he can improve his draft position assuming he isn't taken in the top 3 rounds.

That said, given his power and leverage, he may very well get over slot even if he goes in a lower round. We'll just have to see.

Absolutely they could still leave. That is their decision to make

But I do think they interview today gives you a glimpse of what Jay is selling and how he is trying to get guys to stay. Its hyperbole, but saying stuff like this could be your team or you could be the best LSU pitcher ever is the kind of stuff Jay is saying to try to keep guys around.

If Herring comes back we will have some solid options.

Shores Herring and Anderson isn’t a terrible rotation.

JJ doing a little damage control to keep Herring. And as I’ve said before that scouts have been telling me that Jones will be back. Will have to wait and see.

Jay's also pretty pissed about the 3 players looking him in his eyes and saying they would return only to get phone calls from them the following week

This is a dumb thing to be pissed at. If you have pro aspirations, what's wrong with seeing what else is out there, especially in the case of Kling who has been here for two years. Sometimes guys need a change of scenery.

It doesn't mean they hate the school or the coach, and it doesn't even necessarily mean that they don't return. It's smart to explore all of your options when you only have a finite amount of time to play the game.

Thankfully I've never been around anyone that being a dick comes so naturally as it does for you.
