If I was NC State and one of my biggest rivals (and neighbor) just fired its coach, I would say, we'll forgo the $2M difference just to jump-start the search. While NC State might not be fishing in the same coaching pond as UNC, it definitely would want to land a name coach to keep pace in the ACC.
