Michigan has reset the market of expectations for generational talent now and congress needs to get this NIL crap wrangled in. If this continues, it will be he collapse of college football. I don't care what school does this, it is not good for the sport.

No one is going to write an article that details a long con...and I don't think the Underwood camp would publicize what they did...

This ultimately is the worst part of all concerning the Underwood saga. It's been all fun & games for other alumi & fans of programs who have been critical of LSU in this instance but it won't be fun & games when those programs get out bid for a recruit they feel they had locked down.

Welcome to the 21st century. You can also now replace “passion for sports” with “passion for lobbying/politics”.
This is how everything works now. Larry Ellisons run the world.

It's been much discussed at how the Underwood camp felt spurned by the prior Michigan staff under Harbaugh which opened the door for LSU in the first place. Being the current HC Sherrone Moore was part of that staff, it seems he felt that he had no shot with Underwood & weren't even reaching out to the Underwood camp. It wasn't until this plan began to unfold in the OP, that Underwood started reaching out behind the scenes to Michigan.

I would agree but LSU had already offered him 6. That’s more than any other high school QB has ever been offered. This was just a desperate move by Michigan(really Michigan boosters)by giving him an offer he couldn’t refuse.

I don’t really buy it.
It took the ~4th richest person in the United States, who didn’t even go to Michigan, dumping a boatload of cash at the 11th hour because his 5th wife is a Michigan grad. They won the lottery. I don’t think you can really plan for that kind of outcome.
I think he would be a Tiger if Ellison hadn’t stepped in.

Not only that but he'll just have his CPA's figure out away to use it as a tax write off.
We aren’t magicians. There is no write off for this

Exactly. That's why the Underwood camp asked LSU for a copy of the NIL contract the Sunday before the flip occurred. It was so that they could show it to Portnoy & the Ellison's reps in order to finalize the Michigan deal at a number that LSU wouldn't match & the Underwood's couldn't refuse.

This story proves that the media reporting that NIL had little to do with it is complete bullshite. Portnoy is running with it all had to do with NIL.
So the net story is recruit spends 1-2 yrs cultivating coach and player relationships in the South and primarily Louisiana in the mindset of achieving his goals. In two wks enough money was thrown at him that he scrapped all that work and committed to a place he had no relationship with in 2 yrs.

Hope it works out for em. Preferably not.

It makes everyone feel better to believe that LSU was conned, that this was always the Underwoods' plan, etc. Conspiracies make people feel better. Otherwise, life is harsh and random. The truth is that Underwood wanted to come to LSU until Larry Ellison assembled an offer last week that changed Underwood's mind. Either because Underwood personally changed his mind, or because his family changed his mind. That part does not matter.
You can root against Underwood equally based on the truth. You don't need to manufacture a conspiracy.

quote:What I am saying is that Bruce's camp knew all along that his commitment to LSU would rile up Michigan. In the NIL area, what is the point in the supposed No. 1 recruit committing so early and staying firm in that commitment? That would not maximize value...unless you had other plans.

To maximize value, you either commit early and use that to your advantage or you stay undecided and use that to your advantage...you definitely don't commit early and stay true to your commitment and completely end any chance of getting more NIL money...

The gist is some lady who is a michigan fan wants her team to be good.
Her husband happens to be one of the richest men on the planet.
The woman tells her husband to buy this player so her team will be good.
Husband does it.
I've said it before and I'll say it again. Pussy is undefeated.

Underwood is one player on the field...he isn't superman...
With that much money and passion about it, I doubt she stops with just 1 player
Michigan probably on line 2 saying now we need the best OL and DL's in the country

NIL has zero tax incentive
quote:
That’s the case for large donors with high incomes. Many taxpayers won’t feel those effects, though. Since the passage of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017, only 10 percent of taxpayers itemize deductions each year. So sports enthusiasts who don’t itemize but do want to support student-athletes won’t be affected by the NIL collective’s loss of nontaxable status.
Taxpayers who own businesses can support student-athletes while saving on their taxes by making payments or providing property directly to the athlete. For example, a local business that pays an athlete to speak or appear can most likely deduct the cost as an ordinary and necessary business expense. Similarly, the business can deduct the cost of a product it lets an athlete use for free as an advertising expense.
For fans who own businesses, directly supporting athletes may offer more control over how they support the student than donating to non-tax-exempt NIL collectives—and save them money on their taxes.
