Did you notice that LSU’s hitting was not as productive when it faced good pitching. Surprise.

Also, LSU’s Pitching Staff has been pieced together all year. It was exposed.

Good pitching is called good pitching for a reason. No one is as productive against them.

When good pitching is on it will always beat good hitting.

No starting pitching. LSU wins when the bats are hot and loses when the bats are cold.

Good bullpen most of the time though.

Everyone talking about pitching/fielding/etc when it's really just the quality of opponent each week.

We're about even with UGA/Florida/Ole Miss
we're a better team than Bama/MSU/Missouri
We're not better than A&M/Auburn/Arkansas/Vandy

Starting pitching and we are very average athletically.

I mean… ok

I think The question is why aren’t we as good as those upper tier teams. And the answer is fielding and pitching

have been very up and down. I.e taking/sweeping a series one week only to be swept the next. Why is this happening?

this was OP question. Sure you can explain why we aren't as good as the better teams, but the reason we can look good and win a series 1 weekend & then get swept the next really just comes down to playing better/worse teams.

It's extremely rare for a college team to have enough consistent pitchers to win bullpen games at the rate we are attempting to. College pitchers have off nights and when you're relying on 5-6 guys to get you through a game your chances of a guy having an off night go way up. Sometimes it works but it's not sustainable. Throw in the passed balls and errors and you have a team that can lose any given night. Throw in a murderers row in the lineup and suddenly you can slug your way to a win any given night as well. Thus inconsistent

No starting pitching left. It has been patchwork all season. When it rained Friday, I knew they were in trouble besides the fact that OM is surging. They beat Southern Miss during the week and swept Mizzou the week before and the weekend before lost 2/3 to Arky but should have won 2/3. It was a close series.

That combination was recipe for what happened. Simple.

If the bats aren't blasting runs, every game is up in the air.

It's pitching.

The staff we have simply isn't going to always be able to hold opponents down. So, you mix in a horrible performance (Saturday) with two average performances and you get a sweep instead of simply losing a series.

On the positive side, offensively we are good enough to sweep a series if we do get quality pitching and the team gets hot.

To look back, there have been years where LSU is totally competitive and in the hunt come postseason time and we’d falter for not having a FOURTH starting pitcher. Now we only have ONE. Fontenot and Money were hoped to be solid 5-6 inning type guys and just haven’t panned out.

Our ace... God bless him... he's a true Tiger who is battling every outing... honestly is not an SEC quality starting pitcher much less an SEC quality ace.

Only getting three innings out of him Friday night (due to weather) really hurts because with no clear Saturday or Sunday starter... we basically are asking for 24 innings out of our bullpen in 28 or so hours.

No bullpen is good enough to do that.

We have been able to outhit many teams this year to make up for our lack of starting pitching and our pretty sad fielding. This weekend, one of our best hitters did not play due to injury, and another one went 0 for the weekend.

This team has limitations and needs to be firing on all cylinders to be successful. This weekend, they did not.

This is a team that can beat anyone and can lose to anyone.

So what it really boils down to is that JJ just does not have enough above average/really good players to win at a high level. Plain and simple.

The real answer is poor recruiting by the previous staff. CPM recruited this team and it is going to take Jay Johnson a couple of recruiting classes to get LSU’s talent level back up.

I'm not sure how you could look at his body of work and come to that conclusion.
