Tyrann was the one of the most unique college defensive players in history. Casanova was a standard issue top 5 player. Mathieu in a walk.
ETA: Casanova was a truly great player. Patrick Peterson was certainly better and very similar. Mathieu was a different skill set. He could erase receivers, but his ability to create turnovers was something different that I’ve never seen before or since - and I’ve been watching since Casanova played.

I saw both
Tyrann Mathieu is the best football player I’ve ever watched in an LSU uniform. Period.

If I had to pick one I'd pick Tyrann. GOAT.
You couldn’t line Mathieu up behind the LOS and lead a team in rushing. He was too small.
Different positions as you said. Casanova was more like Troy Polamalu he could cover every receiver and tackle every player on offense. On offense, he was fantastic as well as a KR. The difference is size and quickness. Tommy had size. Mathieu had quickness off the charts.
2 different players and like I said before, Mathieu didn’t play in enough games to be tGOAT.

Casanova played when everyone had to tackle. No such thing as cover guys. Plus Casanova had a top 10 name in college football history… Tommy Casanova.

Have never put them in the same sentence .. both great, different era, different styles of play
I would wonder which had the better supporting cast!

Nice spin-off …
I’m 40… my dad is 80… he was adamant Casanova was top 4. Now after thought and revisit, he admits that yes Mathieu was better

They were different. Cass was bigger, about 6'1 or 2 and about 210. That was big for the early 70s.

I would have to go with the honey badger in a close win

I’ve never seen a player affect a game more than Mathieu

I was a pre-teen whenCassanova played. Saw a couple games in-person and a couple on TV. Saw all of Mathieu’s games either live or on TV. And different eras, so I think you need to grade on a curve, so to speak.
Cassnove split time at CB and TB as a Soph. Great on both sides of the ball. Took away the opponent’s best WR and produced significant yardage on offense. Moved to FS and concentrated on defense and punt returns after that. Great player. Physical defender.
Matthieu was similar in his play at FS and punt returner. But he had such an instinctive nose for the ball. In addition to his electric, game changing punt returns, he came up with so many game-changing take-aways. That sets him apart. I’m so sorry that his LSU career was cut short by his apparent weed habit.
Kudos to him for turning it around, and with a nod to Patrick Peterson’s guidance, I’m really looking forward to this season with the Saints.
I give Honey Badger a slight edge over Casanova because of the take-aways.
PS- I have a friend of a friend whose wife was an LSU coed in the 1969-72 era. She had a couple dates with Bert Jones, but after I pressed her a little, she admitted that she really wanted to go out with Cassanova.

They played 2 separate positions at LSU.Casanova was a safety who was exceptionally fast and physical. He was so physical at times he injured himself. The coaches called him the knife. He was bigger than Mathieu. He might have been an AA RB is he wasn’t a great safety.
Mathieu was a great CB and slot corner at LSU. He was very fast, too but was not as physical as Casanova. He was probably the smartest defensive player I ever saw at LSU. That has also panned out in his pro career.
Both of these players were great leaders and that also was extended into their pro career.

Casanova was the better athlete.
Matthieu’s heart and desire surpassed him.

Both were uniquely outstanding players. in their own right. Casanova had a skill set of size, speed, and intelligence off the charts. Matthieu was the best at anticipating and making a play before it developed. Drugs and bad decisions resulted in his dismissal from team and cost him from winning a Heisman Trophy. Casanova and Matthieu were always making a play when they needed to.

Casanova was by far the better DB. Honey Badger was the best football player. Mathieu is best remembered for wreaking havoc on a blitz or for his punt returns.

Man I was able to see both. Like many others state two different times. Caz was great and is an all time best but the badger is one of if not the best as well. I give a slight edge to the badger but Casanova and the the badger are 1 and 1a for me.
