You can be a Kelly supporter and still express frustration with aspects of the team. Offensively he's fielded an A+ group. Defense is an F and ST's is a C.

We all know the roster challenges, but did not expect the D to be this bad. The front 7 was overhyped as one of the "best" in the SEC. Saivion Jones and Perkins have regressed and Smith is absent. Speights did not materialize the way he was projected.

Kelly gets grace based on where this team was when he got here, but the standard shouldn't change based on whether the fans like this coach over another. I believe in Kelly, but I'm not going to hide my disappointment in the defense. Ultimately the HC is responsible for the whole team and a playoff run would have been possible if we had a semi-competent defense. Still riding with Kelly though.

Love you guys who think building a college football defense is simple. You simple ignore what BK & House inherited and had to work with in a very short period of time. Real simple for a simpleton. Defense not up to par, fire the DC
The defense regressed BADLY. A below average defense is one thing. This is a historically bad LSU defense.

Out of 130 teams in FBS:

99th in passing defense (12th in SEC)
101st in rushing defense (13th in SEC)
103rd in total defense (13th in SEC)

I guess we can hang our hats on "at least we're not Vanderbilt"

And for the "but its only year 2" stuff...that argument held a lot more water before the transfer portal and NCAA allowing immediate eligibility for a first time transfer player. If you know you have glaring holes to fill, you go to the portal and use the immediate opportunity for significant playing time to sign players to fill those needs.

I'm not calling on BK to be put on the hot seat, but it'll make me a whole lot less optimistic about his future here if he doesn't clean House on the defensive staff (pun intended) after the A&M game.

ETA: and the 2024 recruiting class isn't blowing anything out the water. Currently 7th ranked among SEC teams. And our only D-line commits are 3 stars. We aren't beating the UGA and Bama's of the world without elite linemen

Think the criticism stems from not just the general play of the D and ST, but the same repeated mistakes and questionable personnel and gametime decisions.

Whatever makes you feel better about it is okay with me... but the fact remains he fielded the worst defense in LSU's history this season.

Do I think he's a good coach? Yes... but its ok to admit that he's failed on the defensive side of the ball.

Oh so the portal only works in LSU's favor? Guess what our SEC opponents also used the portal except all of the others didn't start out with 39 scholarship players and had an established head coach and staff. The others also were recruiting way way ahead of Kelly and our staff.

Look you simply don't like House and for you like too many others here resort to a lazy simpleton fix, just fire the DC or just fire the OC or just fire the HC. I remember the absolute idiocy here about Ensminger. Fire Enminger fire Ensminger. All he did was be the OC and QB coach for the most historic college football teams in history. Even then he was reviled by some here.

Yeah and Saban had the same first 2 year record as BK except BK played for the SEC title his first year and Saban didn't. Maybe you have been in Alabama too long. In any case you no nothing maybe less than nothing. Certaintly nothing about football.

Why do you feel the need to insult someone with a different opinion than you?

You seem to have anger problems.

Anyone that thought the defense was going to make big strides this year was not paying attention. We lost several very good players to graduation/pros.

The players we replaced them with in the portal were not the same caliber, even though we had one of the best ranked portal classes.

Two of those players were absolute failures in Chestnut and Harris.

Zy Alexander out, Greg Brooks out.

We were super thin to begin with and then 4 of our best have been nonfactors this year.

Very few coaches are overcoming that.

That said, we are not making strides to replace them in recruiting this year.

CBK is now back to depending on the portal. He needs to rally the NIL guys and steal some big time defensive studs from top programs.

Otherwise, we will be in the same situation next year, only Daniels is gone and the offense will take a step back.

So whats the excuse now for the lackluster recruiting class? They've had 2 years to catch up. Maybe the top level recruits are choosing to go sign where they have a better defensive staff to coach them?

Then you also remember that the offense Ensminger was running in 2018 was nothing like the offense LSU ran in 2019 when they brought in Joe Brady as passing game coordinator. There's a reason why NFL teams came calling for Brady to be an NFL OC after that season. Nothing against Ensminger, but that offense doesn't turn into arguably the greatest offense in CFB history without Brady designing the passing attack.

Nobody can play/understand the complicated scheme that the DC puts on the field, so they look lost most of the time.

So, would higher academic standards fix that problem?

He’s objectively done the best out of everyone on that list thus far.

For that to remain the case, he will need to take drastic measures to improve this defense.

I agree but I don't understand not spying Milroe at least in the 2nd half. Sometimes you have to overrule your DC. The midget overrules his OC a lot

A loss away from being 8&4 bro. Your boy is also 0-1 vs “8-4” bro.

The way I see it is that with our type of talent Brian Kelly can have a crazy good offense. He seems to be building that stronger and stronger. We have definitely benefited from Daniels mobility but he went after him and knew that is what he wanted. Miss was already here and you don’t get rid of him. Looks like the next recruiting class he is going straight back to that with underwood.
Defense he needs to find the right guy simple as that. He needs to find a guy that can use the talent pool here for that the same way he is with the offense.
We are very much on a great trajectory.
The odd losses worry me because he has had that rep before but he is a great leader of a football program. He is smart and seems to be able to identify what he needs.

Kiffin and Dan Lanning were both guys we probably could’ve gotten that you could make a pretty good argument in favor of over Kelly. Different situations but both have done very well. Obviously Kalen DoBoer as well, although he wasn’t mentioned really in the search. Venables another second year who’s been just as good as Kelly, with better looking recruiting.

Most of the people on your list no one on here with a brain wanted, Bill O’Brien, Mel Tucker, Jimbo.

Kelly is doing better than a lot of second year coaches/possible hires but it’s disingenuous to only list the mediocre ones and not the ones that are doing just as well if not better than him.

This is a variation of one of those “if you don’t like xyz coach, who would YOU have hired??” threads.

Just remember, every coach that has been fired or run off from LSU has had at least one person making this argument. We’ve ALWAYS found somebody else…eventually, and lately that replacement has won a championship.

BK still has a lot to prove. How will the offense be next year without JD? Will the way he decided to handle special teams help us win a championship? Can he right the ship with our defense? I have no idea. We’ll have to wait and see. But these are the sort of things we need to watch for.
