Don't believe that for a minute. Shaq gives a lot of money and appearances to LSU not to mention "the power of the people."

Alexander told the newspaper that he might have had a tougher time convincing the Legislature to preserve -- let alone increase -- state higher education funding if tens of millions of dollars had been spent buying out Miles' contract. Though public funding would not have been used to pay for Miles' contract, the optics on the situation might have caused problems during next year's budget discussions.
So the reason is he thinks the public is too stupid to understand the difference between tax payer public money and private funding, and the legislative session he's so worried about will be a JBE led one. Frickin think people.
JBE pays off former Blanco hack with plum job at public's expense
And the Blanco hack is thrilled Les Miles is staying.

We're fricked no matter who leads us. Louisiana politics never changes.

Looks like Will Muschamp would have been on the market.
He has a lot of options, but I believe returning to LSU as Jimbo Fisher's DC would have been a viable one.
Muschamp not likely to return to Auburn in 2016

The board was split on the issue, said multiple board members.
“Half were hoping for him to be fired, and half were hoping we’d keep him,” one board member said.
I've seen derrogatory posts indicting Alleva who tried to make the change, Alexander the messenger, powerless Jindal, DGAF Edwards, scheming mastermind Miles, and even Shaq, LOL.
Fairly evident this decision was teetering when a greedy Sexton, and a Death Valley Miles vote nudged it off the cliff.
Time to move on.

This story does nothing but hurt LSU.
What coach in their right mind would want to come into such a political situation? That, plus we just tried to pull a Julius Caesar with our own head coach.

Would anyone involved even pick up the phone for Jindal? I think the Jindal angle means little or nothing to this story. I am sure he mustered whatever meager political will he had left but lets not pretend that that will has much pull at this point. This was Jindal making a story about Jindal.

it's clear Alleva was the only guy really looking out for LSU's football interest here
No, he wasn't. Alleva needs to realize that his negotiations might not work out and he can't completely undermine a coach he may have to work with next year. Don't let Alleva off the fricking chopping block. He earned his place.

Spoken like a guy who gets a rebate on his taxes each year and never actually has to write a check.
As a taxpayer who routinely writes checks to the state and federal government, Why would I want my taxes increased for the school when the school obviously has a lot of "good hearted" boosters who can EASILY write 7-8 figure checks to pay off a football coach and to pay a new coach. I would have told Alexander if this had happened, " hey before you come to the state and taxpayer for more money, why don't you hit up some of the athletic boosters for funding things that actually benefit 99.9% of the students. If they can raise 25 million in two weeks, I'm very sure they can raise 50 million in 3 months ...."

This. What is probably more the case is Edwards and the BOS got involved. Remember Angelle is/was a BOS member as well and his endorsement probably got Edwards the momentum for his election victory. There was probably a determination made that all of this fire Miles and hire Fisher was a social media hissy fit started by a bunch of people sitting in their underwear at 2:00 in the afternoon and a a drunk booster who opened his mouth before he had a lot of other boosters lined up to help. out

I don't think Angelle endorsed Edwards.

Sure, but he isn't the reason they will get to keep their job. Loyalty is a fickle bitch in politics and football.

I think it was more Ned Stark's attempt to take down Cersei.

Unfortunately, the only way things will change is, as others have said, for the major boosters to start pulling their money.
I'm sorry, but if I am a huge booster that gives millions annually to LSU only to have them spit in my face while playing politics with it, then I'd tell them to go screw themselves and keep my money or spend it elsewhere.
Honestly, if Les had any dignity, he'd resign at this point, but it won't happen. Everything is spin to these morons just like they pulled with people saying that Les was getting massive support to stay, when it was in no way that. In fact, a ton of students I know that go to every game, said screw it after the previous three embarrassing losses prior to A&M and stayed home with their families.
As much as I dislike Les as a coach and think he needs to be gone now, I was even feeling bad that it was ending this way and that he deserved a better send off, but that doesn't mean I wanted him to stay, but people like Choctaw and their ilk will claim everyone in the stadium wants him to be at LSU forever.

I don't care that much about it because I don't really use the feature. I'm just pointing out how ridiculously awful it has gotten on here that you can't even post positive about next season with out pissing someone off.
Name one thing trending up for next year besides a recruiting class that hasn't even been signed yet?
Our defense regressed all season, the offense regressed, the special teams sucked all season until it played the worst punt/kick return team in the conference in Ole Miss, but yeah, let's look at the positives like Les' history of developing QBs, great clock management, efficient and championship level offense, right?
