How many has he actually returned though?
Little over one per game. I'll have to look and see what percentage of punts he's returning that were returnable.

Despite the lack of yardage on returns, Giles is still the best return man LSU has had since Matthieu. Not even close.
Other guys since may well have broken off long TD runs once or twice a season - but they misplayed and misjudged far too many for my tastes.
For example, it always frustrates me when a punt returner allows a short punt to land, and watch it bounce/roll forward for an additional 20-30 yards. It stems from a lack of confidence on whether to aggresively attack the short punt and fair catch it. Giles has shown already this season a real desire to prevent that from happening. I love it.
Plus, as I mentioned a couple of times these past few weeks, he is amazingly sure-handed fielding punts.

If you watched him do anything else on the field you would have to be a complete dumbass to not feel like he was going to break one at any minute.
One thing is for certain. Everyone thought he was a massive downgrade compared to Patrick Peterson the year before
Many people wondered if he'd ever do anything. And for the first 11 games he didn't.

It seems like punting has changed as a whole with many teams. Just don’t see as many returns.

I do like that Giles is sure handed. And I’m actually fine with him back there.
But I wouldn’t mind seeing Derrick Dillon or Jefferson back there every now and again to try and spark a big play.

I say we keep Giles back there until he makes a play that would hurt us, and ye hasn't done that yet.
I'm guessing you didn't watch the Florida game.

I think Dillon has great playmaking ability but he has dropped several passes that should have been easy. I don't trust his hands at this time.

Okay, fair point. I just want to see a flash of greatness besides fielding punts which, I agree, is important in and of itself. Would be cool to have a return threat. Maybe he’s got it. I sure hope so.

My thoughts exactly. Is the chance of someone breaking a big play worth a fumble or 2 plus the possibility of even more bad decisions like letting a ball go that should have been caught or catching something that should have been let go. Giles doesnt look like a threat but hes been good at securing the ball for our offense to take over.

I think we all need to put things in perspective. Giles has not had many opportunities to run after the catch. He is very sure handed which is the main thing. He hasn't turned the ball over and has caught everything. That's a plus. I'm good with Giles. I guarantee that if CEO puts someone else out there and they muff a punt it's Giles the rest of the year. Would love to see him break one though. He's got the wheels. We'll see. Let it be.....

What is LSU's scheme that causes punts to be fair caught. The opponent's punt team and coverage, as well as LSU's, are designed to prevent returns. Unless the punter fouls up the receiver is at his mercy.

Mathieu had big play ability from the bench dude. Everyone knew he was dangerous. Giles hasnt made a play anywhere to even give hope that he can bust a big return. Im not gonna advocate for just throwing someone else out there for the first time in a big SEC game though.
The stats don't bear you out. TM7's top return game prior to the Arkansas game garnered 39 total yards. No TD's. Through 10 games he had 17 returns for 194 yards, 11.4 YPR. 2 games with 0 returns
Giles Through 6 games has 7 Returns for 87 yards, 12.4 YPR. I don't think Giles has the speed to break one but he is pretty sure handed.
Ed paris ran 4.53 40 in High School, I wonder if he can field a punt?

They trust Giles to field the punts.
I'm sure they would prefer to have a playmaker like Jontre Kirklin back there for a spark.
Given that Orgeron wants to be aggressive with "explosive" plays I would bet that Kirklin gets the chance if he proves he can dependably field the ball.
It's the classic "risk versus reward" decision for a head coach.

He really hasn’t had many opportunities to return any.
Posted on 10/18/18 at 8:44 am to Hoguester
I haven't seen any examples of Giles missing opportunities, and he has not muffed any, so I say let him keep returning punts.

Every time I look up he's fair catching a ball with 4 guys surrounding him.
True.
I'm happy with Giles out there. He's catching the ball, and I've only seen a couple he could have returned. No turnovers, I'm fine with it.

I think we should have JJ2 or CEH returning punts.
