I think Giles is definitely sure-handed which is certainly important in fielding punts consistently but I don’t see him as having any return strengths. When Tyrann Matthieu returned punts, we had tremendous potential for breaking a return. Is there any other playmaker that we could put there? Delpit is crazy quick. Could he have that playmaking edge that Matthieu had?

Until that Arkansas game in 2011 it was thought that Mathieu didn’t have burst or big play ability on punts either

If you think about Giles's return opportunities, are there more than on eor two that stick out where he should have done more?

I know he's catching flak, but I'm beginning to think our punt return schemes must be terrible as a whole. Every time I look up he's fair catching a ball with 4 guys surrounding him.

Yeah, if we had a punt return or blocked punt, we'd be running on all cylinders.

Mathieu had big play ability from the bench dude. Everyone knew he was dangerous. Giles hasnt made a play anywhere to even give hope that he can bust a big return. Im not gonna advocate for just throwing someone else out there for the first time in a big SEC game though.

I assume we are red-shirting Provens?

I have no idea, I would probably like to see a guy like Dillon.

Hands are important though, but it would be nice to actually have both.. I don't ever recall LSU being such a non threat in the return game.

I was wondering that too. It seems like punting has changed as a whole with many teams. Just don’t see as many returns. I wonder if we are not putting enough pressure on the punter and that’s giving him plenty of time to let his coverage to get down the field.

Keep Giles fielding punts. He is very sure-handed and does have the capability of breaking a return if he has room. The main thing is he fields the punts, saves us yardage instead of possibly letting it bounce further, and doesn't muff any punts. I say we keep Giles back there until he makes a play that would hurt us, and ye hasn't done that yet. He secures the possession, and that's the main thing.

He looks incredibly slow all the time, so not sure it matters.

I do feel like on his best return, it's probably housed or at least made into a much bigger game by most guys.

Yup, I find it a silly comparison.

I was always impressed by Mathieu's skills. Even as a freshman.

Giles unless we're somewhat desperate, in which case id rather go for the block anyway. The combined chance of a muff or penalty is much higher than that of a big return.

I know it's not ideal that we used a scholly on Giles, but at least he can stand in and field the ball consistently, which is valuable.

We were actually getting OBJ involved by midseason to mix it up that year.

THIS
When he fumbles we can rethink his returning punts.

This is just a bunch of hindsight bullshite

Before that he was unremarkable as a returner

Everyone knew he was a great defensive play maker

As a returner a lot of people doubted that he had the top end speed to break a big run until he finally proved everyone wrong in the Arkansas game

So I just looked it up - Giles has the highest average returns per punt of any LSU return man since Mathieu.

If you watched him do anything else on the field you would have to be a complete dumbass to not feel like he was going to break one at any minute. But i guess that explains why people on here didnt feel that way.
