When I was in St. Louis, I listened to WWL - sometimes it was ok, sometimes not so good and a lot of time not just awful.
I was driving around one night trying to find a good spot and crossed a railroad track where the reception came in clear as a bell.
So - I stopped on the tracks and listened to the game and kept an eye out for trains coming.

When I first moved to the DC area, the Tigers were never on TV. I would have to listen to WWL in the parking lot while sitting in my car because the radio in the house wouldnt pick up the signal. When there was a commecial break, I would run back into the house for a pee and a beer!

I grew up listening to the Tigers on WWL when living in Ashland, KY. (NE corner of the state.) It always had to be after dark when the ionosphere allowed for more skip in the AM signal. This past Saturday, I caught only the last play of the game on WWL as I was backing the boat trailer down the ramp on the Chattahoochee River after a day of fishing north of Atlanta. (I knew better than to watch the Tennessee game on TV. CBS day game broadcasts out of Tiger Stadium usually end up frustrating me to no end.)

No, I mean, how is it not too far for your radio to pick it up?
At night, the ionosphere rises to a higher altitude above sea level. AM radio waves are reflected back to the earth by the ionosphere although some do penetrate it and travel out into space. When the ionosphere is higher, the reflected radio waves can travel over a longer distance. This phenomenon is known as "skip".

My brother in law lived in Pittsburg and he drove to spot above the city on a mountain top. Depending on the weather he could hear the entire game. Most games were at night. The police making their rounds would stop and cheer with him. This was back in the 60’s and 70’s. He would bring coffee with him to keep himself warm.

The woods near Hattisburg. Couldn't get a signal in the camp and spent the game looking like a crazy person pacing around the treeline with a transister radio, freezing cold.

But I listened to WWL in Illinois at night as a 10 year old kid after my parents told us that we would be moving to New Orleans. The first thing I did after getting the news was put on headphones and scan the AM dial for New Orleans radio. Didn't hear the Tigers during that time.

At night, there are some places in and around Merritt Island, Cocoa, and Rockledge, Florida, where I picked up the Les Miles Show on WWL this past Wednesday night. When I lived in Fayetteville, NC, there were areas near Cliffdale Road where I get get a clear signal at night.
I was traveling from Pensacola to Fayetteville, NC, using I-65 and I-85, during the 2004 Citrus Bowl game, I picked up WWL all the way from Pensacola to La Grange, GA. I stopped in La Grange to watch the game on TV in a hotel, only to be heartbroken when Iowa scored that last-second touchdown that beat LSU.
I could pick up LSU baseball in Gulf Shores, AL, during the day.
When I lived in the Pensacola area, I could pick up LSU baseball and football on WWL in the daytime and at night.
One of my fondest memories was listening to the 1959 LSU-Ole Miss game on WWL in the driveway with my Dad (1950 LSU grad) in Mobile when Billy Cannon ran the Ole Miss punt back 89 yards for a TD.
The easiest part of tuning to LSU sports has been detecting the announcers. When I am searching for LSU sports around the 870 AM dial, the distinct voices of John Ferguson and Jim Hawthorne have been the "tuning fork" (as in tuning a violin) to let me know I have reached for what I am searching. Interestingly, this analogy works well in the Spiritual realm (my sheep hear my voice, and they follow me).

Chicago Illinois. I was there for a work training class, and listened to the LSU USCe game in 03 (I think) where Alley Broussard ran wild over the 'cocks.
