Just got home so sorry if this has been already discussed.

Arkansas had something like a 4th and 5 with a fairly lengthy field goal. So LSU calls time out. I said the only reason why LSU would call a time out was to be sure everyone was on the look out for a fake field goal.

And Arkansas still ran the fake field goal and it worked to perfection! What in the hell is the coaching staff doing?

We called TO because we didn’t have enough players on the field

Staff thought Ark would punt so didn’t have right players in. Called TO and gave them a chance to call the fake

Honest question here….

Is there an exception to rule of a players knee being down on a field goal??? I ask only because the holder clearly caught the ball with one knee on the ground before he ran for the first.

Bad teams find a way to lose. Unfortunately, LSU is that.

Tbh, it surprised me. We've ran a lot of fake punts over the past 10 years, but I think this was the first under Pittman. I used to expect them in tight games and now I don't.

We called time out to give Arkansas the chance to set up a fake field goal.

Yes. LSU ran a fair amount of these when we still had balls so I've seen the rule discussed a lot.

With all due respect, we have gone for it a ton on 4th downs and just ran a fake punt the previous week. We just have had awesome kickers the last 4 years.

Yes, the holder's knee on the ground doesn’t kill the play. Otherwise, the play would be over as soon as he catches the ball, and the kick wouldn’t count.

In NCAA Rule 4, section 1:

ARTICLE 3. A live ball becomes dead and an official shall sound his whistle or declare it dead:
[...]
b. When any part of the ball carrier’s body, except his hand or foot, touches the ground or when the ball carrier is tackled or otherwise falls and loses possession of the ball as he contacts the ground with any part of his body, except his hand or foot [Exception: The ball remains alive when an offensive player has simulated a kick or at the snap is in position to kick the ball held for a place kick by a teammate. The ball may be kicked, passed or advanced by rule]

Coach O set the punt return team in, Palmer was in the end zone before LSU realized it was a FG. Tried to send in FG team, but we had a lot of players on the field and didn't want to get a penalty.

Oh my gosh, that's funny. And, I believe it's true, too.

Had they expected the fake FG as they probably should have, O should have put in the first team defense prepared for the fake. At the very least, it would have probably forced Pittman to call his own timeout to either put his punt team in or actually try the FG. LSU just can’t let them get a first down there! If the kid makes a 55+ FG, good for him.
