And accuracy makes up a lot for not having a rocket arm. I agree it's strong enough, and as he continues to get more reps and develops his timing on routes and with receivers, his confidence in throws grows, and then you see what kind of arm strength he really has.

There were two throws that looked "weak":

1. The 3rd down out to Dupre in the 1st Quarter

2. The out to Chark at the goal line in the 2nd.

With #1, he threw it all the way across the field flatfooted in the face of an unblocked pass rusher

#2 I think was a mix up between WR and QB. I think Eitling though Chark was going into the endzone. Chark cut it short, and I thing Etling adjusted right before he let it go and it floated.

LSU doesn't attack the seams or middle of the field all that often, so we haven't had to see him really stick one into a tight window. Still, I think he has enough arm strength to get the job done.

Joe Montana didn't have a rocket, but he did ok.

I'll take the guy with an average, but accurate, arm any day of the week over a guy with an inaccurate cannon.

I'll take awareness and accuracy over arm strength anyday, and I think he has a strong enough arm.

I agree with that. That throw was very Jarrett Lee-ish. But Etling for the most part has shown some pretty good pocket mobility/feel that he shouldn't be throwing those back foot throws that often.

It's average, not weak. Those long outs scare me a little.

Danny Wuerffel had an average arm and he won a Heisman. Not how hard you can throw.

WTF? You're either trolling or a poor judge. Etling has made a half dozen throws in his first two games that are as well-thrown as anything Harris or Jennings ever did. Fair to say he's closer to Matt Mauk or Flynn in talent than to Russel or Mettenberger but he's got above-average QB skills in the SEC already.

Etling is the answer, the reason LSU will finish 10-2, and the reason Miles will stay.

there? Etling's arm is more than adequate, but I can't think of an NFLer with a worse arm.

not to mention that he couldnt have put the ball in a better place. It was borderline a perfect throw between the defender and the back of the endzone.

He throws with touch

This. He throws catchable footballs. Thats all that matters. There will be times that you need to get into a throw, but if you read coverages correctly and get ball out on time, you don't need to throw it with great velocity.

Some of the problem is timing too - with receivers and in game situations. He's been practicing with the team since last year, but that was his first start in two seasons. He has to get used to SEC play and the speed of the game. I think that has more to do with it than arm strength. Once the timing and speed of the game is down for him, I think that he will place the ball better.

Receivers are open when he throws it and when the ball gets there. That means that the arm strength is fine. But, the timing is sometimes off. I think he'll get it.

If he can complete 65% of his passes, we are in good shape.

His arm isn't the strongest but it's good enough. Romo...brees...Aaron Murray all had great success without a cannon.

He needs more zip on the screen passes but that's easily doable.

This is pretty much where I'm at with it too.

I think much of the progression/reads we're seeing with Etling is his understanding that he can't fit the ball in some of the same windows into which Harris though he could throw. Harris's inaccuracy is well documented, so his execution was wanting, but he probably had a little too much confidence in his arm strength at times. I believe Etling is looking for easier throws, and while there is nothing wrong with that whatsoever, I believe it is due to his understanding that he doesn't have a rocket arm. He is playing to his own strengths.
