LSU showed me zero leniency or emotion. I even wrote an essay and got all my papers signed by my professors on why I should be allowed to withdraw from school past the drop date and they still denied me. I had to accept what ever grades I got for the rest of the semester.
That really sucks. Did they not have the Incomplete option when you were in school? It is designed for situations exactly like that.

So he fricked off in school and he should just be given leniency?

You say that you sought leniency.
If you don't think Emery deserves leniency, why did you think you deserved leniency?

Sorry to hear of your family losses. I wonder what other universities positions are for situations like this. To me this is another sign of why LSU is ranked where they are nationally.

My guess is he wasn't a shithead who dicked around for two years then scrambled to do the bare minimum at the last minute and use a family death as an excuse for his consistently immature behavior.

I can pretty much guarantee you none of Emery's professors were going to bat for him.

Is a death in the family usually ground for leniency with regards to scholarships? I didn't think it was.

re: emery's attorney just on finebaum

damn, could someone just post a fricking link around here?

Emery's lawyer basically said the same thing per Brody Miller earlier today.

LINK

quote:

Brody Miller
@BrodyAMiller
Emery's stepfather was hospitalized on a ventilator for much of 2020 due to COVID-19 complications, and his grandmother died.

Jackson: “It’s damn near immoral to punish a young man who is going through the difficulties he is going through."

Advocate article elaborates further:
LINK

quote:

The attorney representing John Emery Jr. intends to submit new information to the NCAA later this week in the hopes of restoring the junior running back’s academic eligibility by the time LSU plays Sept. 25 against Mississippi State.

Don Jackson, an Alabama-based attorney hired by Emery’s family, said Tuesday morning he will file a request for “reconsideration based upon ‘new information’” with the goal of having Emery reinstated before LSU’s first Southeastern Conference game.

“We're optimistic that when information is provided,” Jackson said, “we'll be able to get this decision reopened and hopefully have him on the field within the next two weeks.”

quote:

Emery’s side believes extenuating circumstances over the past 18 months should result in a waiver, Jackson said. Within that time, Emery lost his grandmother to cancer, his step-father underwent a lengthy battle with COVID-19 that put him in the hospital on a ventilator and his mother tested positive for the virus. At the same time, classes moved online because of the pandemic.

“Our position,” Jackson said, “is that all of these factors would lean toward a waiver.”

Emery tried to regain sufficient academic standing this summer and was an honor student, Jackson said. LSU tried to get Emery a waiver because of his family's hardships. The NCAA denied the request.

He was the Dean of Summer School, y'all.

Honestly, I'm a lot more empathetic after learning more of his story. Not sure the NCAA is gonna see it that way. Surely Emery wasn't the only player struggling with online classes and COVID trauma in their family.

But hey, maybe the NCAA fears Big Woke and BLM above all. This lawyer is a pro at getting the NCAA to come to the table.

re: emery's attorney just on finebaum
My advisor advised me to drop. I didn’t think they were going to come back and say you are denied. My teachers had to sign off on it and they all did. I believe they put what your grade at the time was.

The reasoning was I wasn’t the one sick and it wasn’t an immediate family member death.

I remember all this because it was after spring break and I didn’t go on spring break, I stayed at my grandmothers house helping her with whatever she needed.

That’s fricked up. Sorry that happened to you. Hopefully Emery doesn’t have to go through the same thing.

This is something that many students have to deal with every year and most never get leniency. Why should Emery be any different? Sounds like some here want special treatment for football players.

Remember this is the same lawyer that failed with Fulton last time. The reason why Fulton was reinstated was because ppl at LSU noticed a discrepancy, not the lawyer

I feel bad for Emery, but I don't think this is going to fly with the NCAA. Seems like a Hail Mary to me.

Well, even if you didn't think you *deserved* leniency you'd be dumb not to try.

I think he does, but for his grades. I wasn’t trying to play football. I was just wanted to wash the semester and start over next.

I honestly don’t know why you can’t do that. Again, I paid tuition. No scholarships.

It's actually something a lot of students get leniency with now. From an administrative standpoint, is not hard at all to document a family hardship, withdraw from classes, take incompletes, and work with your professors to fill in the grades next semester. Dozens, if not hundreds, of students whose families were impacted by COVID did this last year.

The problem is that Emery could not due this and still be eligible, because of the position he put himself in over the past two years. It is also extremely unlikelu he could complete his previous coursework and his current coursework at the same time to regain eligibility. So instead they threw a Hail Mary with summer school and when that didn't work are now playing the sympathy card.

I doubt it works. Really opens up Pandora’s box for thousands of athletes who may not have a valid claim.

Whether Emery's professors went to bat for him has nothing to do with what I said. But how would you know what they did? Do you know his professors?

Well I empathize with him if he’s usually a good student and is just short on the credits.

But not if he fricked around and didn’t do an online class. The whole point of the remote learning was because of covid. That wasn’t option when I was at LSU.
