Archer was worse than Hallman, if only because he was handed a Ferrari and turned it into an Edsel within 3 years.

Bob Broadhead was the 1980s LSU Joe Alleva. We just didn't have TD to solidfy our hatred.

I always find that analogy silly. Archer also had a 10-1-1 season and LSUs only top 5 finish between 1961 and 2003. As others mentioned he was not a good recruiter but recruiting was starting to slide under Arnsparger. Also in Archers defense somewhat, the NCAA instituted new eligibility requirements prop 48 I think it was called and a lot of in state kids were ineligible. Hallman was a better recruiter but an awful coach. If you could combine the 2 he might not have been so awful

Archer was (and is) a good DC , just wasn’t ready for a head job. Wasn’t he like 35 when he got it?

He slipped on recruiting. Seemed to prefer out of state kids over better in state kids.

Ps: I just saw he’s still coaching . Was a DC in the Canadian league. And soon to be in the xfl. He’s had a long career.

what was the Broadhead-gate scandal where he bugged someone's office or something, someone actually hired a banner towing plane to fly around the stadium during a game that said "bug off Bob"

What he has is 20/20 hindsight.

This couldn’t be more wrong. Bugs Brodhead was waaayyy ahead of his time with things like in stadium revenue, ppv games etc. He was the one that hired Bill Arnsparger but resigned before Archer was hired. He also hired Sue Gunter and Skip Bertman.

I’ll see your Mike Archer and raise you one Curley Hallman (btw, Curley used to have “three-a-days, during his August camps)

The "etc" being fricking the students over on seating & tickets.

We led a march to his office back in the day over this. The only thing you could get LSU students to care about in the 1980s.

his own! it was the tito horford era

quote:

When the National Collegiate Athletic Association was interviewing basketball players from Louisiana State last year as part of its investigation of the school's recruiting practices, someone else intended to listen. That someone was Bob Brodhead, the L.S.U. athletic director, who admitted in Federal Court that he had bugged his office to eavesdrop on the conversations. Yesterday, Brodhead, who agreed to plead guilty to charges of a misdemeanor count of conspiracy to intercept radio communications, was fined the maximum $1,000 and sentenced to perform 200 hours of unspecified community work by Judge John Parker, who told Brodhead that ''playing by the rules of the game is the minimum to be expected of a person in your position.''

Acting on an informant's tip, Federal agents last October seized microphones, a tape recorder and a radio transmitter hidden in Brodhead's office, where the interviews had taken place. When the equipment was found, Brodhead said he was attempting to catch a member of his staff who was leaking information to reporters. He later admitted that he intended to listen to an interview of a recruit, Tito Horford. The L.S.U. athletic committee is scheduled to meet Monday to determine if Brodhead should be retained in his job.

No ads and stuff

Typical of LSU though to whine about having to pay then wondering why we suck at everything

My freshman year in 87 we paid $2-3 maybe for football tickets, I know it was free before but come on that’s still cheap, basketball was free and we were on the side not behind the goal

That wasn’t what I meant, he used the ole Ferrari to Edsel analogy I don’t think that’s good but that’s another discussion besides we were going to dip after 87 regardless

To your point one of the other options was MSU DC Nick Saban another was Mack Brown who, unlike the other 2 had coached at LSU and was a HC in the state. Hindsight is always 20/20. Spurrier may have wanted the job but he wasn’t the Ole Ball Coach yet. Alabama and Texas hired coaches that year so it wasn’t like LSU was the only program that didn’t hire him he got the Duke job that year

It is Curly Hallman and not even close.

Biggest Disaster In SEC History

1993 LSU 5–6 3–5 T–4th (Western)
1994 LSU 4–7 3–5 4th (Western)
LSU: 16–28 10–21
Total: 39–39

Archer is still coaching at a reasonably high level 30 years later. Curly never sniffed making the jump to pro ball, fell out of college ball (at every level) and finally flamed out as a High School coach. The fact that anyone would make him the head coach at a university (at any level), let alone at a major football school, is, in hindsight, laughable.

In some alternate universe somewhere Archer might have been able to right the ship and make his tenure successful. No universe exists where Curly could have done the same thing.

If you want to put Joe Dean above Curly as the worst thing to happen to LSU you would have a pretty decent argument; but not Archer.
