Didn’t Gio miss most of the weekend because of injury again?

He did. I believe he had 1 regular at bat and 1 bunt opportunity and played a little in OF on Friday night; but then did nothing the rest of the weekend. He was moving around the dugout and foul territory similar to Crews; so it doesn't seem like it should be serious. But it is still another injury in a long line for him, which is why I'm not even sure he makes the team.

I think there are enough talented defenders and speed to more than adequately build an OF (remember, they played most of last season without him and the OF never really suffered from a defensive perspective) and there are certainly more talented bats that Johnson will prioritize over Gio.

I made this post on another site breaking down what I see as possible cuts right now, meaning this can and likely will change over the course of the next month or so. Some of y'all will probably hate it, call me crazy or dumb, and downvote to oblivion because it will have some well known and liked names as possible cuts. And that is fine, but instead of criticizing, if you disagree, tell me why and who you think would be cut instead:

The breakdown of players currently (counting Shaffer who won't be here till January) is 22 pitchers and 27 position players. It is unlikely that Johnson cuts more than 1-2 pitchers, as he has traditionally carried at least 20 pitchers on a roster, and I think it is more likely that it is only 1, leaving 8 cuts from position players.

Of the 27 position players, 15 are returning players from last year's team: Crews, C. Doughty, Morgan, Thompson, Dugas, Milazzo, Drost, Gio, Cranford, Safford, B. Doughty, Bianco, Beloso, Travinski, and Wyeth. I think it is almost inevitable that whatever cuts there are will come from those 15 as it would be hard to see Johnson cutting a true freshman or even someone that just transferred here unless they are just that bad.

Of the 15 returners, I think there are at least 5-6 guarantees, which are the first 6 I listed. That brings you to 9 players left. There has been discussion and it is possible that Travinski may be able to qualify for a medical redshirt, thus not counting him towards the 40 and eliminating the need to cut 8 players; so now we have 7 cuts from probably 8 players to do it from. If Drost stays performing the way he is then he will be safe. That means the remaining returners would be your 7 that get cut, which would be Gio, Cranford, Safford, B. Doughty, Bianco, Beloso, and Wyeth. Only way any of them get protected is if Johnson cuts 2 pitchers instead of 1 and cuts any freshmen or transfers.

That would be a pretty astonishing list of players to cut.

It's an interesting point of view. I know Johnson values senior leadership. Johnson didn't recruit any of the new signers besides Priester and Haddad.

So if Beloso, Gio, Bianco and Cranford outplay Simon, Holt, Smith and Haddad you believe they will still keep the younger players?

Let's say you keep the younger guys and next year you have a new set of younger guys. Do you keep the younger guys even they are outplayed?

I would have to lean on the guys that give me the best chance this year.

The only way Drost leaves is if he wants to. I don’t understand some of the comments on him in this thread

Yea, probably. I think the roster will actually go below 40. Some guys will get cut, some guys will leave seeking playing time

There’s an overflow of pitching imo. They all can’t get the ball.

I think all of these are at risk: Gio, Cranford, Safford, B. Doughty, Beloso, Wyeth, Hasty, Brady. I'm beginning to wonder about Fowler, too. Travinski may get a redshirt, then you have a possible injury to Leto that may warrant a redshirt...Haddad, Holt, Dutton, G Fontenot, and Taylor are also redshirt candidates.

ETA: I do agree that JJ will be more patient with the younger guys that he has more time to develop. He may hang onto some of the older, fringe guys if he chooses to redshirt the younger guys. B Doughty will almost definitely be here in some capacity. I don't think Beloso leaves, either, even if he's last on the depth chart.

February is so far away. I can't wait and football can't get us through December happily.

So. Long. I need a fun early season midweek game.

I thought I heard Preister was the real deal. Like go JUCO so he could get drafted early good. Is that not true? Haven’t heard much about him

Overall I'm getting excited about the defensive potential of this team

This was my biggest concern. Johnson hasn't had the best defensive teams and it seemed like we would be sacrificing a lot of defense to get our best bats in the lineup. Good to hear that it doesn't appear to be an issue though. JJ stacked

I kind of doubt marucci is paying the money he would get where he is projected to be drafted. He could already want to stay and the deal makes it sweeter, but he is projected 1st round. That’s a lot of cash.

Yes it did. Balls Gio would have gotten to dropped for base hits. The guy is fast. Speed increases the catch radius. When you put a slower guy in the outfield you might not see any obvious errors, but you will see more base hits.

I understand that you are spelling out the numbers crunch JJ has with this roster.

The real question in my mind is what will he value in year #1? Senior leadership or the potential of young guys that have never had their chance? Another way to put it…..do the upper class men buy in more than kids that he really did not have time to recruit?

Or, he simply keeps the kids that buy in to his system the most? I think this is your answer. Top Talent can be replenished quickly with transfers of a tr FR with a NIL deal. JJ will keep the kids that buy in and create the right locker room culture over the kids that may seem to have more long run potential.

Priester has the potential to be good defensively and offensively. I don't know what happened on draft day but I don't think it worked out as good as Priester had imagined which opened the door for Johnson to swoop in.

Priester is viewed as a developmental prospect. He could very well be our starting catcher next year but probably not this year. I know he saw a lot of action Sunday and a couple balls got by him, but that could have been more on the pitcher than him. The two at bats I remember Sunday he had a walk and a strike out.

Yes, Priester was thought to be picked high enough to skip college altogether. That didn't happen. He was heading to Meridian but JJ got to him. I think JJ laid out a plan that he liked - he's been very good at developing catchers the last few years. It's still early for him.

He will value winning & development. Which means keeping the best players

obvious.

this is my point. there are many that have not yet had a chance under the lights. which begs the question that will be answered over time....is potential valued more than a locker room and establishing the attitude for future teams.

Winning is always the goal, but new coaches do things to be sure that their methods are fully accepted by the team. if that means that a few individuals that make the team are questionable....but Johnson gets his loyal locker room.

no matter how this plays out, I cannot wait for baseball season to start!

I'm going to assume Johnson will sit down with the kids after the fall and let them know where they stand. I wouldn't be surprised if some of these kids make the decision to leave on their own.
