Not as important in baseball. Plus the starters will all be experienced.

He has brought 3 guys over from Arizona, too. Culture guys, and to fill weaknesses

I'm going to assume Johnson will sit down with the kids after the fall and let them know where they stand. I wouldn't be surprised if some of these kids make the decision to leave on their own.

got to be the worst part of the job. even if you can help facilitate the team for a kid to transfer to.

There’s an overflow of pitching imo.

Technically, yes; but only by 1-2 pitchers. Even before roster expansion last year, Johnson typically carried at least 20 pitchers on his rosters. That’s why I don’t expect many cuts to come from that group.

February is so far away. I can't wait and football can't get us through December happily. So. Long. I need a fun early season midweek game.

You’ll have the 2 exhibition games between ULL and UNO next month. It will be good competition and interesting to see what Johnson does with lineups and subbing.

Yes it did. Balls Gio would have gotten to dropped for base hits. The guy is fast. Speed increases the catch radius. When you put a slower guy in the outfield you might not see any obvious errors, but you will see more base hits.

We can split hairs here; but just because they were lacking someone a little speedier that theoretically may have been able to get to a few more balls over the course of a season doesn’t mean the defense was bad or even subpar.

Not to mention, while I agree Gio is fast, I more than once have seen him take bad angles to balls or get bad jumps because of misreading the ball off the bat. So he may get to some because of his speed; but he also misses some because of his less than stellar instincts at times.

B Doughty will almost definitely be here in some capacity.

I’m not saying, nor will I ever say, that definitively someone will or will not be here, especially this early into practices. But I have 2 reasons for thinking or saying B. Doughty will be gone:

1 - If the story is completely true that he pretty much only ever got a spot at LSU to begin was because of Cade, then I’d say that LSU has more than paid it’s debt. Braden has had 4 years on the team here and I would assume (or at least hope) has already earned his degree. He’s only getting another year because of Covid. So if he is cut or told to look elsewhere, then he nor the family should have any reason to be upset with the program. And it’s not like Cade is going anywhere when he is a for sure starter and in his money year.

2 - Again, if there was any sort of quid pro quo agreement before, Johnson owes no loyalty to that; so I think he is unencumbered on feeling like he has to keep Braden.

And do not mistake me. I’m not trying to bash the guy at all. I don’t know him personally, but he seems like he’s a good guy and he has dedicated 4 years to the program. But LSU is trying to win a championship and if we are honest, I don’t see him being one of the 20 best position players that are likely to be kept or should be kept.

If he wants to remain at LSU, he should talk to Johnson about possibly obtaining the GA coaching position as it doesn’t seem as though they have one this year. At least I haven’t noticed any former players out there thus far.

I think Braiden would be perfect for the GA coaching position.

Right, but some guys aren’t going to want to stick around & throw 15ip midweek & be totally irrelevant

Agreed. We have been spoiled by centerfielders who are fast as blazes, get great jumps, and make catches at the extreme edge of their range.

I just don’t think B Doughty is going anywhere, even if that means he has some kinda non-roster bullpen catcher gig, GA position, etc.

I said the same for Beloso. I just don’t think he’s going anywhere, even if that means he’s the last roster spot and buried on the depth chart and projected only for occasional, non conference at bats.

Here’s what I was told about the scrimmages last weekend. Pitching and hitting was about what was expected for the first time out. Had some good and bad with both. Defense was pretty good with the exception being the outfield didn’t look great. Milazzo was clearly the best catcher. Moved infielders all around to different positions. Money looks to have lost a lot of weight and looked in good shape. Will be a very competitive fall with some tough decisions to be made. Is that pretty accurate tigerlaw?

Sounds accurate to me and matches up with my observations, especially the part on Milazzo, and Money definitely looks like a completely different guy. I almost didn't recognize him at first with the body composition change as well as cutting his hair.

On defense, I had noted similarly. Overall was solid with some really nice plays thrown in, especially the first 2 games. Sunday was noticeably less than stellar. I wouldn't say I noticed a whole lot of faults from the outfield but probably wasn't watching with as critical of an eye. The most I saw were a couple instances of giving up on or missing a ball because of a bad jump or angle. The worst was on a Stevenson fly ball to right field fence that was pretty badly misplayed; but can't remember who the RF'er was in that situation.

As for hitting, I walked away generally impressed, especially for it being the first games. Overall the players I expected to see things from or wanted to see improvement from, I did. Only 2 exceptions there were probably McManus and Thompson. Berry took a bit to get going, but I'm not worried at all about him. And we of course didn't get to see some of the bigger names like Crews and Morgan.

PM always had one or two true fr leave after fall ball once he told them their place on the depth chart
I expect that to happen as well
It will all work out
I agree, most of the pitchers are safe except for someone like Fowler and Brady who have struggled enough from last season to now to not feel safe or some of the true fr may not pan out during fall ball
The veterans and players like Cranford or Safford will have decisions to make if they don't like their playing time options and that could include someone like Gio, Beloso or even Bianco
You do not need all the catchers they have on the roster so someone like Wyeth could leave and B Doughty (maybe he hangs it up, he has had 4 years)
And the two mentioned Leto and Travinski maybe get the injury redshirt and don't count against the roster
If you are bringing in Shaeffer at midterm that tells me Brady and Hasty better impress

Also no way Berry is not in lineup somewhere with the numbers he put up at Arizona and Team USA
At min DH
Plus he could get drafted so he likely wants to be on the field as well
He would not have come here to sit the bench when he was a starter at Arizona and middle of the order hitter

No NIL deal is going to keep a player here for a senior year if they get drafted high enough
Crew will go very high in 23 draft

Dugas showing the leather early. Diving play in LF down the line in the top of the first. Not sure who’s pitching for purple. The LSU app is only showing Mo Hampton on the roster. Coleman pitching for gold.

Riley Cooper, the AZ transfer. Just took a big time liner off his left side. Seems to be okay; but that will leave a mark.
