It's worse than that. I mean, you are right. He should have shrunk his zone and been looking for something perfect. But, the more important point is that you do that not so you draw a walk...you do it so that you can take a hack.
He literally was beaten on that pitch. The swing looked like a "try and foul it off swing". He's up there guessing. He's in way over his head.

Ok. What is that stat about how often lead off walks come around to score? Isn't it something like 70% of the time it works every time?
