Dumb question: why not pull Skenes after 1 inning up 6-0?

Could we not have pulled him, won the game and saved him for game 3? He had less than 20 pitches I think. I am just a dumb fan and genuinely wondering

You wouldn’t want the ace to pitch a few innings? What’s the point of pulling him? He opens the series. That’s his role.

But if the game is already a blowout, why waste him? Save him for game 3, which is gonna start 0-0

It's not good to do that to a pitcher. He has a set schedule and routine. Don't break it. A whole lot of bad can come from that.

You’re cutting into his recovery for next week if you do that. Throws his entire schedule off for the week and you don’t want to do that to your starting ace pitcher.

2 major reasons is to save bullpen arms in game 1 and if you do that you turn around with Skenes on short rest next week. They played it out just how they should have.

It would throw off his entire routine which would probably lead to an injury. At this level starting pitchers have an intense “ramp up” & recovery schedule.

This isn't 11 year old travel ball. You don't just do that kind of stuff. In the post season you can maybe see that type of scenario but not in a regular season series.

You new to baseball?

Skenes has a fairly set schedule, plus on top of the 20 or so pitches in the first he tossed warm ups and got warm in the pen.

You don’t pitch a guy like Skenes on short rest unless it’s the post season.

It would be dumb to bring him back Saturday after having him warm up and pitch.

That works with a guy like Bradford but those are extremely rare

No reason for Skenes to come out for the 6th last night

Eta- oh wow.. you were serious

Old baseball way of thinking is the answer

It is early in the season and Jay needs to try and find a third starter

Maybe if this were Omaha I think he could have considered it with a 6-0 lead and only 12 pitches thrown.

The key difference is UK was not a threat to put up crooked numbers and they conceded the game with their pitching. Unlikely to face that scenario again

Then we throw off his routine and he needs to be fully ready for next weekend

Don’t change the routine. He’s trained to start, not pitch 1 inning.

That's not how it works.

I wonder if people who can’t answer a simple question are just too stupid to keep their mouth shut or maybe they are so frustrated living in their mom’s basement that they have to try and make others feel dumb for asking an honest question. Bravo Mr manly man, you win the internet today. Feel better? Can’t we just try to be better guys? These are fellow Tiger Fans.

Short answer is it just doesn’t work that way, as others have said. Coming back on one days rest to throw 80-90 pitches on Saturday would also disrupt his prep for his next start next week.

Not to mention if the arms we tossed last night in his place stunk it up and we had to go through 3-4 guys and perhaps not even get the W we are low on arms the rest of the series.

When you are up 6 you play to win the game and and not overthink it.

Great post Rob. I agree and personally I have wondered why we don’t start Skenes every game. He’s been so good. Why mess with a good thing? Just give him the ball
