Does Ja'Marr Chase have a chance to be a top 5 all-time Tiger?

Even though he probably wont match his production from last season this year he will probably at least get around 1000 yds and 7-10 TDs which will put him #1 in many (if not most) LSU receiving records. I think he has a solid chance to pass up Josh Reed as the best LSU WR of all time (if he hasnt already). Does he have a chance to rise into the Burrow, Cannon, Mathieu echelon with another great season?

He needs 909 yards to break the record for most receiving yards in a career for a Tiger.

He needs 4 more TDs to break the record for most receiving TDs in a career for a Tiger.

He has a chance to shatter both of those records. If he does, he is 100% a top 5 Tiger all time imo.

If he for some reason stayed for his senior year (which I dont recommend) he would probably put himself so far ahead in every career receiving record his records would never be broken.

Mathieu is not a top 5 tiger.

Love the guy, but he’s not

Depends on what your criteria is. Mathieu is the greatest playmaker In the history of the program. If you are talking about strict playing a position then he isn’t even top 5 at CB but if you are talking overall player there is a strong argument for being top 5.

Lol what? He damn near carried that 2011 team. LSU doesn’t win that SEC championship without him. He sparked the team every time it got off to a slow start.

Carried is a strong word but he definitely sparked the team against Arky and Georgia but the defense overall carried that team for the whole season.

People forget in that Arky game that the offense ended up having almost 500 yards of offense and Jefferson threw for over 200 yards that day. Also typing that reminded me how excited we used to get when a QB threw for over 200 yards. Now that’s a bad game. Thank Joe Burrow.

Are you on drugs?

We just witnessed the greatest college football team in the history of the sport. I wanted to compare the 2011 team, so I went back and watched Mathieu highlights and I was still flabbergasted. I thought the 2019 offense would put what he did to shame, but what he did on the field is still unbelievable. No he wasn't putting up insane stats or breaking interception records, but he was able to change a game unlike any player I've ever seen, Tiger or otherwise.

Yeah the defense did carry the team but I don’t believe they win the Georgia game without him. They were getting dominated and he just started doing honey badger things.

he did in more than just those two games though.
he just typically did them early enough in the game that they don’t carry the same aura as those games

Oregon and WVU he made plays in first quarter that opened the flood gates.

So, to name some of the candidates for top 5, he bests most of the following (adjust for recency bias):
Billy Cannon
Joe Burrow
Tommy Casanaova
Michael Brooks
Glen Dorsey
Leonard Fournette
Kevin Faulk;
Bert Jones
YA Tittle;
TM7
Patrick Peterson;
Kevin Maewae
Eric Andolsek;
Devin White;
R. Hobley?

With a Belitnikoff Award and a season left to play, he's certainly in the conversation.

It's so hard to compare players from other eras. Offenses are putting up such crazy numbers now, there is no way to know what past players would be like today.

Josh Reed would kill in this offense. Rohan Davey would kill in this offense. Kevin Faulk, Tommy Hodson, Wendell Davis, etc., would all go fricking crazy today.

He may get Shaqahacked. Hell if I'm playing the Tigers he's the one guy I'm targeting to shut down.

Coach E addressed this very thing and knows its coming.

Will be interesting to see the chess game played out

If that happens Racey/Palmer will eat all day.

I've already got Mashall penciled in for 1000 yds and 10 tds, especially if he keeps his feet right all season. He keeps getting slept on and I have no idea why.

Chase is a taller Odell Beckham. Hes just had a better qb getting him the ball, and he is one of the best locate/adjust wrs we'll ever see. Top 5 will be tough but if he gets 1500/15 tds you have to have a talk.

Not a fair comparison to Chase. Clayton in his junior season, '02, had 57 receptions, 749 yards and 5 TDs. Chase had 84 receptions, 1780 yards and 20 TDs. Would Clayton have put up the same numbers with the same QB and offense that Chase had? We'll never know.
