HARTVILLE, Ohio — A rebellion sweeping the nation gathered adherents in the parking lot outside northeast Ohio’s largest flea market on the Saturday before Memorial Day. Before making their way to stalls selling whirligigs, handmade soap, and peanut-butter Buckeye brownies, dozens of people stopped at folding tables where volunteers hawked petitions to abolish property taxes. Few needed much convincing before adding their names.

“I’m old. I’ve paid my home off,” said Ray Warner, a 72-year-old Akron resident wearing a Cleveland Browns coat to fend off the damp chill. “Why would I pay property tax?”

Across the country, homeowners are asking the same question. Fueled by the rising cost of homeownership — soaring home prices, mortgage rates and insurance bills — they are revolting against property taxes at a scale not seen in a half century. The 1970s property tax uprising that one journalist called a “Revolt of the Haves” reshaped American politics. The depth and breadth of today’s proposals threaten to do so once again.

If it is not the city, it is the county, if not them the school district, if not them the Feds, if not them the State....and insurance rates run amok.

Flat tax with use tax and call it good. Need to cut spending? Fine, many of us have and will continue to do so

Ray probably calls the fire department to come pick him up when he falls but doesn’t understand why he pays property tax

Property taxes pay for services related to the property - police, fire protection, road maintenance, etc - plus a few other things.

It’s a tired argument.

We are overtaxed. A lot.

You should not have to pay annual taxes on your home and cars.

Whenever I go in and pay mine, the county clerks and sheriff's are all gathered around computers on Facebook.

while true I’m pretty sure the actual resentment over property taxes is that only property owners pay them

But the property owners benefit from the services.

I pay over $1,400 a month on property taxes alone on our very modest home. I have never called the police or fire department a single time in my entire life.

They are making out like a bandit

Everyone benefits, but renters pay through their rents. But the dummies think they don't, so the vote "yes" for everything. That's how crap like CATS and COA always get approved in BR.

I think a stronger argument is the auditing of the spending. I think there would be more support for that.

The renting market is a competitive one with a shortage of housing. Owners are putting up capital and taking risks. If renters don’t want to pay the equivalent taxes in their rent, I’m sure they can find other options.

Look at the millages before you say that. In EBR the biggest categories are schools (I don’t have kids in school), libraries (I don’t go), BREC (I go to a private club).

Having good school and government services around you keeps you from living in the ghetto whether you “use” them or not.

I personally don’t want to live around a bunch of idiots, but your mileage may vary
