Big matchup like the 2002 Va Tech game set is back

That was nearly 20 years ago. Wisconsin in 2016 was the only other big early OOC game we've lost since then. We have as many early losses to "rent-a-wins" (Troy, UAB) in roughly the same time frame.

Everybody else is working out the kinks early in the season, too. Kicking off the season against a bigger opponent instead of a cupcake is a better measuring stick for the team, and can only help in the long run.

Depends on our team. If it is a year with a lot of new players and things to get worked out, I like a good tune up game, but generally I prefer a matchup against a good but not great opponent like we have this year.

Rent-a-win to get the timing down.

Generally I'd prefer P-5 but if it's a top ten opponent give me a warm-up game. I think UCLA is just about right, other than them getting a warm-up.

Big non-conference game

Especially if it’s in Texas.

California and Wisconsin, not so much

Big game for the off-season excitement.

Rent-a-win = no excitement.

Depends on the year…..if you have en experienced team and coaches who have been there a while, I prefer a premier matchup.

However in a year when you have inexperienced players or new coaches (who are trying to install a new system), I’d weather have a tune-up game.

Rent a win.

And until they expand the 4 team playoff, I dont understand why any SEC blue blood would play any non conference top 15 team, especially on the road.
The victory will never outweigh the loss as long as the SEC is the dominant conference.

Bring on UCLA in Cali baby, much better than a rent a win

USC would be a nice first game in Jerry World

Michigan home and home at LSU and the big house would be historic

Texas still owes us a game at home. That would be a great first game next year

We did Oregon, played Miami, and others. Penn State home and home would be OK but we played them in a bowl back in 2010.. dam already 10.5 years ago!

The ideal thing is to have a rent-a-win to open, then a big game the following week, a la 2019.

Week 1: Premiere P5 opponent
Week 2: Cupcake
Week 3: SEC opener

Bonus points if the first game is part of a home and home and not a neutral site game.

What you call a rent a win game in the first game of the season is really a tune up game.

Hence, I can't understand why you make it sound so distasteful.

A competitive first game from a middle of the pack power 5 conference at neutral site. Then a prime time game

I want us to play stingy defense, have a balanced offense with improved Oline play. Rank and color off the jersey shouldn't matter.

Everyone wants the big nationally covered game, until you lose it

I wish we opened with rent-a-wins this year. New OC, new DC, talent everywhere but a ton of guys to be broken in.

Those games suck

Yer not jes' woofin'. They're usually no fun and it seems sometimes LSU plays its worst those nights. Cf. Troy 2017, 2004, 2008 and UAB 2000. And never forget the canceled game vs McNeese.

I don't like UCLA having a tune-up game before us, but I love having a big kickoff game vs. a snoozer rent-a-win. It's so much more exciting and competitive.
