Why? Already a log jam at 1B. Don't think he is a big enough impact player to take and jam up that position even more.

This is exactly the situation we discussed a week ago about the balancing act between trusting your current guys to develop vs. getting a more proven guy from the portal. How much of an impact do they have to make to be worth potentially stunting development of current guys and maybe pushing them towards the portal?

It’s hard, but Jay’s got to kind of serve 2 masters—the ‘24 team and the ‘25 ones and beyond. Do you take a look year rental like DRock mentioned knowing it will make your ‘24 team a little better, while making the ‘25 team a little worse (on paper) by taking ABs and reps at 1st from guys like Jones and Frey? And how many portal mercenaries can you bring each year before that “come be the next Crews” pitch starts to fall on deaf high schooler’s ears?

This is not a criticism of Jay now or of any of the potential portal guys he may wind up taking. Just pointing out the conversations and unintended consequences that have to be talked out and weighed in this new era of portal + NIL. It’s not easy.

He's defensive insurance, at worst, if everybody else fumbles around at 1B. Klein can absolutely rake, too. He might not be a big power guy but he can hit. He can play OF.

I want to see more of Milazzo

I'm not 100% sure Milazzo comes back. I've heard from family friends that he was pretty close to leaving last year and playing in Japan, and that he and Jay don't exactly see eye to eye. Though you would never know that listening to Alex or his parents talk, as they are genuinely good people and have taken everything in stride and Alex has been a true Tiger and done everything asked of him. Now I haven't heard since the CWS what he's thinking. Did winning it all make him want to come back for a repeat, does he want to leave LSU going out on top, or what he's thinking from his broken leg.

Even if travinski comes back, he & Jones (or both) will have to backup at C at this point.

Klein could also possibly be a roster exemption given his seniority

He’s a better player than Nippolt who was brought in late last year. I don’t think a Tommy white is walking thru the door at this point.

I didn't think about him being old enough to take a +5 spot on the roster. Wouldn't mind it if that was the case.

I just think if Travinski comes back you have him, Jones, and Frey to play 1B. I think those 3 have a much higher upside than Klein. Would just have to trust in the development of Jones and Frey.

I'm not certain those exist for next year.

Is it confirmed that Milazzo is gone?

So 40 man, not 35 + 5?

Just looked it up. It is 40 man roster now with 32 allowed scholarship instead of 27. So no +5, just 40 man.

If they don’t, even more reason to be more selective in who you decide take. There would be some hard conversations for Jay to have even if they had the extra 5 spots and they don’t get another portal guy. If those spots are gone and we continue to add transfers, that numbers crunch becomes even harder.

And I’ll continue to qualify this, I am absolutely not saying to not take any particular player. Just that Jay and co. have to consider and weigh a lot of things besides simply the value they can add to the ‘24 team.

I agree that it would be asinine to think we are going to the portal and grab kids the level of White or Skenes each year. On that note, it is amazing to realize that this time last year, White had just signed with the team and Skenes was still in the portal and wouldn't sign until the end of July. Who could've imagined that July 2022 would have been such an amazing fricking month in the history of LSU baseball.

The current roster, if you were to assume all players drafted sign except Jake Brown, Ashton Larson, and Cameron Johnson, is at 43. That also doesn't count Tanner Reaves because I'm not sure about that whole situation yet. If you include Tanner Reaves that would make 44.

So the numbers aren't terrible, but I would assume to see a couple more transfers picked up.

If the numbers you posted are right (and I’m sure they are), I’m pleasantly surprised—I thought we were closer to 50. And I’m sure we will add a couple more. There are probably a handful of guys that will leave after fall of their own free will for more playing time. Jay may not to have as many hard conversations as I assumed.

But I’ve always been speaking more abstractly and hypothetically about balancing short term vs. long term decisions, not about any specific player or any specific season (though I’ve likely used some as examples).

Then consider that Trenton Lape will need to redshirt due to injury. Shores could still redshirt next year if by January his progress dictates that. Then we're down to 41 or 42.

Holman
Montgomery
1B (I vote for Klein bc of his defense, experience, and connection to LA)
Middle Infield (I vote for Furr bc of the same reasons as Klein)

It depends on if he is as good or better than Jones or Frey defensively at first and which one hits the best. As always, so much of the position decisions will be based on who hits the best.

Is Travinski flexible enough to make all the plays at 1st? Tre was one of the best LSU firstbasemen I can remember. Travinski has the size you'd like, but not sure what kind of toll catching put on his knees/legs.
