All people ever talked about was wanting a coach that could consistently get LSU to the tournament. Wade had a tournament team his last two years and likely will have one this year. He's still learning how to coach better on defense, but I don't think we need to be complaining too much about wins. At the end of the day, that is what's going to matter come tournament time.

It’s refreshing to see the team hit crucial free throws. So many games are won/lost at the line.

I don’t miss the days of when we had guards shooting 56% from the line.

Dale Brown had an assistant one year (maybe more), Tex Winter, who had made the rounds in his career.
He loved offense and scoring and never spent time on defense.
He said this game is all about points. “In fact”, he once commented, “In just about every game I’ve ever seen, the team with the most points wins.”

People are so used to football, but the impact of in game coaching for basketball is so much less. At least these teams are competitive.

IMO, WW has our program in a steady good direction now. I'll take WW over any MBBHC we could get to LSU if WW leaves. (Please, don't let WW leave!)

We just had 2 20+ win regular seasons in a row. The last time that happened was the 89/90 and 90/91 seasons. 30 years ago.

Wow! In game coaching in basketball is critical and the game is happening much quicker. In addition you don’t have coordinators focusing on one aspect of the ball. Substitutions, changing defenses, sets, all critical. Coaching is huge in all sports.

Did you miss the bold part? Regular seasons.

For Johnny Jones his team went 20-14 in 13/14. But only 18-12 in the regular season.

For John Brady his team went 20-10 in 04/05 but was only 19-8 in the regular season.

I don't think this is the case. The players are learning how to play defense. I remember his first year when he said he had to spend an inordinate amount of time on defensive fundamentals, suggesting the prior staff did a poor job. I believe many high school coaches do a poor job as well.

The people on the Rant complain about aspects of wins all the time. It all comes down to if the coach is liked or not. We beat OM & UF, yet everyone complained about the D.

Trent was much better at Xs & Os but absolutely horrible at recruiting.

Johnny was just average to below average at everything.

I would take Wade every time, but that doesn't mean he is above critique.

Exactly.

Miles won a lot. In fact, at a greater rate than his predecessor at LSU...and got blasted constantly. Maineri wins a lot...and gets blasted constantly. But Wade is completely above critique?

Yes, I know the reason is largely because expectations for the 3 programs are vastly different. But I would still think (hope) the overall goal for ALL 3 sports is ultimately a championship.

To that end, Wade has done a tremendous job in his time thus far at LSU. No rational fan...including myself...has or is calling for his firing. But that doesn't mean it is "wrong" to point out a GLARING and OBVIOUS deficiency of his coaching approach. A complete lack of real desire or ability to be a good defensive team. They look no better defensively than they did last year. And they haven't been a good defensive team (relative to their competition level) in 4 years under Wade. That doesn't mean that haven't had great success overall compared to the previous 25 or so years of LSU basketball. But it does mean that if the goal his to be a championship team Wades approach to the defensive side of the ball creates a ceiling. Years of metrics bare that out.

The frustration comes not from the fact they aren't "winning enough." It comes from the fact that you see the talent, offensive ability and vast potential for this team/program to be great, but they refuse to meaningfully address the ONE negative holding them back. It's like having a child in your household consistently being an honor role student but knowing that if they just tweaked their prep slightly they could potentially be a National Merit Finalist. Their level of achievement is not bad by any means. But the realistic potential to be greater is there and they refuse to tap it.

It's no different than how fans felt about Miles with his refusal to change his offensive approach. The ONLY difference is the expectation levels between the two programs. Is it somehow wrong to hope and believe the basketball program could be a serious national championship contender? Because let me tell you, offensively they are just that...TODAY!

of course Will Wade is a huge step up from our previous coaches. No one doubts that.

But just because he's better than those two, doesn't mean he's perfect, and it's ok for fans to offer honest critique of his shortcomings.

And defense is a big problem with Wade's teams.
