What's best for him may be different than what you think is best for him. Maybe he and his family put a premium on him earning his degree. Maybe he set goals for himself he hasn't attained. Maybe he's not motivated by money. Maybe he loves being a college student. From a strictly financial perspective, sure he has nothing to gain by coming back. But what really matters is what makes him happy. Worst case scenario, he comes back and earns his degree, gets hurt, falls to the 2nd or 3rd round in the draft, still gets paid more than 99% of graduating college seniors, and still makes the NFL. I don't think White appears to be the type whose entire future livelihood is dependent upon him playing football. Comes from a good family, has no children to support, etc.

I can see players like Guice, White and countless others floating out something like this and then kicking back and laughing their arse off at these threads.

Objectively, the best decision for his financial future and career in football is to go pro.

I'm sorry, but that is not really up for debate.

If he doesn't care about his financial future and values a senior year in college more than that, then so be it.

The LSU fan in me wants him to come back, but I will not harbor any ill feelings toward him if he goes pro.

The risk of injury is too great at his position.

Thanks for everything, Devin. You owe us nothing. I have enjoyed watching you play and will continue to do so when you are in the NFL.

Maybe he enjoys the experience.

And objectively, some people aren't motivated financially. For instance, I know countless people in my line of work (I'm an attorney) that are fully capable of making several hundred grand a year. however, they aren't motivated by money and choose to do work like being a public defender or working for legal aid, making salaries comparable to a manager at Subway. But they are happy, and they wouldn't ever have anyone tell them they made a poor decision.

It's very easy for us to look at things purely from the lens of White as a football player and his professional football risks. But, different people put different priorities on things.

No, I am not arguing that from a purely financial standpoint in the NFL him coming back is a risk. So please stop acting like I argued otherwise. Thanks

All it takes is a couple first round juniors to come back for their senior year to completely turn around a program. It could be the extra boost thats needed to get our program back to the elite status that it used to have. (If only we had first round talent on offense that made the decision to come back). It has a snowball effect that rolls over into recruiting and depth and experience and passing along knowledge to underclassman. Teaching work ethic and to continue to lead by example for another season is invaluable. Theres more to just wanting someone to come back because you like them or they are fun to watch. They infect the rest of the players in the program and set an example.

Every now and then a school NEEDS a player/players to come back. Devin White appears to have the personality that "gets it". There's more to being a Tiger than your three years of service and off to the league. He's not like guice and LF7 and just a freak talent. He's truly infected with the LSU life and program, he can be the one to set a precedent on how to BE a TIGER.

ETA: This is why I think its possible Devin White might truly WANT to come back.

Yeah, I know. That's why I said that underneath the part you quoted.

Obviously the guy loves football, so even if you take the money out of it the equation, the best move for a long career in football is to go pro now.

Here's the thing. You had to go back to the 90's to find one of your two examples. I could list off tons that didn't do what those two did.

What if he loves playing college football? What if one of his biggest goals is to win an SEC or national title? He only has one chance to play college football. Again, what's best for him isn't objective unless you know what his goals are in life and what it would take for him to accomplish those goals. With the type of person White has shown to be, I think he would be successful in life if he never played football again.

While I don't disagree, it's not about you. It's not about me. It's not about anyone but Devin (and his family).

If he wants to come back for his Senior year for the experience, the possibility of winning an SEC and/or National Title, if he wants his degree, then he should come back.

HOWEVER, if he prioritizes his career and/or financial security, he should declare.

We can type out all the "what I want" stuff we want, but it's not about us and what we want.

All of those were clear cut first round picks at the end of their junior seasons? Or did they return to improve draft stock?

Being drafted in the NFL is totally different as well now also, as far as $$ is concerned.
