Most people are being a bit myopic here and not seeing the forest for the trees. When Kelly left, Notre Dame was not doing the things it needed to do to compete at the highest level. They simply wouldn't pay for it. However, once he left, it was a black eye. So they started making changes. Freeman now has one of the highest paid staffs in the country. BK never had that. ND is also surely spending money on players now like they never did before.

So, Freeman is a great coach. He's not winning because of BK. However, ND is only a school where a great coach can succeed because BK left. So, comparing the two based on their performances at ND is comparing apples and oranges.

We still need to see more from BK, but this coming year should tell us a lot. We've ponied up for players. We've ponied up for an awesome an defensive staff. We should field a team that is in the upper echelon of the league. That doesn't mean we win it all (as there are usually quite a few teams built that way and luck always plays a hand), but we should pass the eye test. We should be close.

Orgeron has a head coach record of 67-47 and was fired from both jobs.
Freeman, who is only 38, is 33-9.
What makes Orgeron’s resume so much better?
His role as frequently fired position coach?
What programs would take O as HC over Freeman ?

Per OP - because he won a title.

They are trying so hard to convince everyone Freeman suck. Why I dont know.

BK isnt a bad coach so I dont understand why both cant be true

ND 2012 and ND 2024 both played 4 ranked teams during the year. But what Freeman has done running through the playoffs so far is very impressive. And Kelly and that 2012 team got raped in the championship. I believe ND is in better shape now, and if they beat Ohio State it would be hard for anyone to argue otherwise.

You may believe what you wrote, but the truth is Kelly is not a better coach than Freeman. In 12 years at ND, Kelly never won a major bowl game, his record against the top 5 and top 10 was abysmal. Freeman in year 3 has 2 major bowl wins (Sugar and Orange), has beaten 3 top 10 teams, the SEC champion, and BIG10 runner up. Freeman has accomplished this with a decimated DL and OL, as well missing one of their starting DB's. He's pretty much done this with a 2nd and third string DL and OL.

Most of the ND fanbase appreciates what Kelly did in bringing ND back to a point where they were a top 10 program, however what he said after his departure soured any good will.

Finally most of the ND fanbase isn't bitter about Kelly leaving, in fact we are thankful LSU took Kelly from us. He'll be good for 10 win seasons most years and a playoff spot, but he's like James Franklin where he just can't win the big games. He won't win a championship at LSU or anywhere for that matter. He's not elite, he's just very good.

How many starters were recruited by Kelly on that ‘12 team? Weis left Kelly a goldmine. Start with Manti… his ND record also got pummeled by the NCAA.
Plus, during Kelly’s tenure ND dropped over $1/2 a billion into the program to upgrade facilities/stadium/removed grass surface at Kelly’s request…private jets for recruiting… His career biggest post season win - Music? Sun? Pinstripe?
Also, Kelly left ND because he looked at the current roster he assembled, ND as a whole and believed he couldn’t compete for a NC. Freeman proved him wrong.
The Indiana, Georgia and Penn State outcomes prove ND and Freeman belong… Lastly, Kelly’s record at ND benefitted from weak schedules.

PS Kelly ditched his undefeated Sugar Bowl bound Cinci team (D’Antonio left him a loaded roster). He could have signed his ND contract, a non-disclosure agreement and finished the last few weeks out. His jumping ship says a lot.

Bending over backwards to slander Freeman
Crazy how the narrative flipped from BK is the winningest coach in college football when defending him to now ND doesn’t play anyone since Freeman took them to NC in year 3.

Time will tell who the better coach is but here are the non coaching facts.

Kelly's public image is unlikeable, he comes accress fake and insincere. Because of this the media and public will always attack him.

Freeman comes accross as genuine. He also has a certain charsma that Kelly will never have. The media and public love him.

This positive press is only going to help Freeman.

Right now, ND looks like a a complete football team-offense, defense, special teams- and they won 2 playoff games and have a legitimate shot at the NC.

In 3 years at LSU, Kelly has never been able to put together a complete team. Year 1 ST lost games. Year 2 was LSU's historically bad defense. Year 3 was offense (no run game), defense (no run defense) and ST (field goals and punting). LSU has regressed since Kelly's year 1, and we played in the Texas bowl which is exactly where we were when Daronte Jones was the coach and Jontre Kirklin was the QB and Kelly had just signed his $100 mil K

Freeman is doing a better job than Kelly so far, and he makes 1/2 of his salary

Kelly inherited a Weis goldmine of recruits. One class he inherited was ranked #2. After his ‘12 run on the backbone of Weis players, who Kelly insulted, he went:
9-4
8-5
10-3
4-8

He also had his ‘12 and ‘13 season wins vacated by the NCAA.

From another site:
“Marcus Freeman beat as many teams that will finish in the AP Top-10 in the past month (3) as Brian Kelly beat in 12 seasons at ND (2012 Stanford, 2013 MSU, 2020 Clemson).”

BK fluffers have to tear other people down to prop Kelly up.

Sad
