News: Neil Farrell, a projected starting #LSU defensive end, has decided to opt out of the 2020 season, he tells
@SINow.

His family was hit hard by COVID-19. He plans to return to the team next season, he says.

More likely to get it off the field than on the field. Has to do what he thinks is best though. He’s returning next year so that’s a plus

He's a senior I thought? So players get another year? Why wouldn't he just go to the draft?

“defensive lineman Neil Farrell has opted out of the 2020 football season, he confirms to The Athletic. First reported by @RossDellenger.

"I'm focusing on my family right now," he said. His family has been hit hard by COVID-19.

Best of luck to him and his family.

That's awful. Hopefully they pull through and he can finish his career in tiger stadium next year.

I was thinking Roy but I wasn’t sure if he was playing DT or DE. He’s good enough to play both.

I understand the decision in his case. Nothing wrong with wanting to be close to family. From a football perspective, I think this is okay for LSU in a weird way. Defensive tackle (he wasn’t playing SDE) is the deepest position on defense, but Shelvin and Logan are gone next year. This allows Roy (who O thinks can be a first rounder) to get more playing time this year. Farrell will be back next year, which mean the D-tackles will be just as deep next year with Roy, Taylor, Farrell, and Masson Smith (if he signs of course).

Was looking forward to see him get more snaps this season and see what he could do in a 4-3 scheme. Hate to see him opt out but its at a position where we have a bunch of depth. Roy, Guillory, Eric Taylor are all going to be good. Hell maybe Nelson Jenkins can finally get on the field too

Those are all defensive tackles. Neil was playing defensive end. We don't have hardly any depth at that position.

Have they said what happens to these guys eligibility? Do they get an extra year if they sit out?

He has a RS left but just curious otherwise

But people can take the necessary precautions to help prevent it hitting their family.

I’m proud LSU was at the forefront of this measure," LSU athletic director Scott Woodward said in a statement. "Our message to our student-athletes must be clear and unequivocal — we support you and we will stand by you in your decision making during this time whether you can compete or not. Your scholarship and the education and opportunities it affords will be protected here at LSU and across the SEC.”
