I see no problem in at least trying to get the red shirt and pretending he is not going to play otherwise

This could be a situation where LSU is just giving it a shot and if the appeal fails Nuss will play anyway. If the appeal fails and he doesn't play...I have no understanding of that. He should be jumping at the chance to prove himself, especially with a new HC. In todays world of college football RS's are almost meaningless. Caleb Williams could decide to transfer here next month, who knows.

He still has potential to be a 3 year starter. Seems the bowl would be a perfect opportunity to show the new coaches what you can do.

And if he really is good, he’s leave for the NFL after his Jr year anyway.

To me it seems he’s wasting a golden opportunity to take control of the QB room.

He can still showcase his stuff in the bowl practices and spring/summer and playing in the bowl wouldn't give him the starting spot next year for sure anyway. The fact remains, no one knows what the future holds and Nuss still has his redshirt left at this juncture in the season where all we have left is an inconsequential exhibition game. That isn't worth throwing throwing away an entire potential year of eligibility that he could potentially need in the future. And that's really all there is to it.

Agreed

The interesting part comes when they deny it

ETA: in a perfect world, he won't need the redshirt, but what if he gets injured in his last season and has played too much to get a medical redshirt? He would want another year.
If it is his last season, meaning his last year of eligibility, then he is done.

The irony is that by using his redshirt now, he loses it. If he gets injured to start the season 2 years from now, then he loses that season anyway, whether he plays a game or not.
If 2 years from now he transfers but has to sit a year behind a senior QB, he loses that year of eligibility even if he never plays a game.

He isn't "saving" a redshirt, he is losing it by skipping the bowl. Wasted opportunity to play. You shouldn't take those for granted.

Any chance that Nuss will play either way? Maybe they are just saying this as they try to get a waiver and even if it gets denied he'll still play.

Certainly. But "insiders" will tell you different.

I’ll be disappointed in Nuss if he doesn’t play. Be a leader and get a step up on the QB competition in the spring and fall.

How is this possible? He can play in X number of games and keep the redshirt. If the bowl puts him over that, he loses it.

It’s not complicated.

Because the answer is always no if you don't ask.

Who knows, they may ask if his limited roles in one half of the McNeese and one half of the Central Michigan game can count as only one game rather than two against his eligibility.

It's not like the NCAA is going to punish our team for requesting a favor.

OR... and hear me out... the kid doesn't want to limit his options over an exhibition game. There is a real chance that Walker Howard or a transfer walk in and take the starting QB job which would mean that Nuss has to find somewhere else to show case his skills. I completely understand the kid wanting to make sure he has as many seasons to actually play as he can to try to make it to the NFL.

Wanting to keep his redshirt is one thing. Refusing to play when he’s the only scholarship QB left on the roster is something else entirely.

I think it’s worth mentioning that it hasn’t been said explicitly (from why I’ve read) that Nuss has outright refused to play without a waiver. It could be that Kelly doesn’t want to burn the redshirt in a meaningless bowl game as others have suggested. I don’t know how likely that is, but it’s possible. It’s also possible that he plays either way and this is all pointless.

That said, if he does indeed refuse - that’s selfish, and a strong indication that he has one foot out the door. I’m sure he would prefer to keep the redshirt either way, but when you’re down to one scholarship QB it is what it is.

This game means a lot. Every game is meaningful because it is competition requiring teamwork. Why even have any bowl games unless it is the playoffs? Why have teams with very little or zero chance of winning a championship play games at all? A bowl victory is worth celebrating.

Please explain. He is actually using his redshirt for it's intended purpose if he skips the bowl. If he plays he still has the option to redshirt later on...

I guess it is just semantics.

is this bowl game and this season worth wasting a year of eligibility on?

If he is fully committed to being at LSU next season, then it presents an opportunity to (a) gain more valuable experience that will help him in an anticipated QB competition, and (b) allow him to get a "jump" on that competition before the new coaching staff.

However, if he is not committed to returning to LSU at this time, then playing in the bowl game probably isn't as important as maintaining his 4 years of eligibility.

In the grand scheme of things, not really.

Because it brings in money to the conference. That is the ONLY reason why there are 35 or so bowl games. Not because there is a huge demand to see a 6-6 team play a 7-5 teams as a "reward" for a "great season". Basically, the tv networks need programming and a bowl game, even one between two mediocre teams, brings in more revenue for the TV network than a re-run of an episode of PTI.

This makes no sense. If he uses the RS now and gets hurt 2 years from now, he'll have 2 years of eligibility left after that. If he burns the RS now and has this year count, and is able to use the RS in an injury year 2 years from now, he'll still have 2 years of eligibility left. Either way you're using the RS, you only get one of them.

In other words using the RS now guarantees eligibility until his RS Senior year should he need it. What if he gets injured in like week 7 down the line? He will have played too many games and it will count against his eligibility regardless of if he has a RS saved or not. At least using it now guarantees him an extra year should he need it

I can’t help but wonder if he and his family are hedging on staying at LSU if Howard storms in and wins the job. Maybe preserving his freshman year gives them more flexibility if he doesn’t stay?

This. Of course this. And it is understandable. If he loses out to Walker Howard next season or the following year, he would be better off having at least 2 years of eligibility wherever he transfers. He is definitely not saving the redshirt for a 5th year at LSU - that is comical to even consider.

Cause he had a coach and staff that put up with that shite and mentality and didn’t squash it in the first place.
